Hey I was just prescribed this too to take along side my flutiform and Ventolin... The pharmacist warned me that a lot of the side effects arise from taking it long term and I probably wouldn't notice much in the short term. I've only had 2 doses but I haven't had any side effects.

I hope this helps you x

Hi,

I have tried montelukast but found it kept me from sleeping. The best description I can give is that my mind just wouldn't switch off so I could sleep, this steadily got worse over about five days until I stop taking it then started to sleep better. I was on high dose of pred and an accumulation of inhalers at the time but they have never disturbed my sleep as much as the montelukast. I didn't find that it helped with the asthma either. Currently trying to find one that does. If you're worried about side effect can you increase your preventer inhaler?

As with all drugs, always worth a try. If the pro's weigh out the cons it's worth sticking with it.

Best of luck

Thank you both for your reply , as I seem to have all the year round allergy don't think will take the Montelukast I suspected there would be long term problems from what I have heard or read about , im sure there must be something out there that might help me , just need to keep trying .

Hi,

I've been taking Montelukast for years and haven't noticed any side effects. I have found it to be the best med to control my allergic asthma that I have tried (and there has been a lot). I do keep an eye out for side effects but have been lucky not to experience any. I hope it works for you.

Hi Maurveen,

I started montelukast 6 or 7 years ago.

I stopped it for about 2 years as I has strange allergic reactions (widespread hives, wheeze, and feeling faint) and easy that it can cause one of your white blood cells to go up (eosinophils) which I thought may have been linked. However a couple of years after that I had a couple of asthma flare ups and restarted it.

I only realised that it can have neuropsychiatric side effects this week. The same year that I started montelukast I developed a bout of anxiety &depression. I had another really bad one a coulpe of years later - I phoned up my GP practise this week to check whether I had been taking montelukast at that time and I wasn't - so I guess in my case it could be contributing at times - but I now know it's not the sole cause & I think it makes a significant difference to my asthma. I guess there are always issues teasing out what are true side effects, verses symptoms that people would have developed anyway - and having a chronic medical condition like asthma, already makes you more likely to develop anxiety/depression.

Whatever the side effects of a medication are - remember that not all people will develop them - and for most medications you could trial it and see how you go.

Good luck!

I have been using it for about 2 mths and feel it has done me good as I cough a lot with my asthma, and it calmed it down I take inhalers seretide and spirituva so far no side effects from the Montelukast

Thank you all for your kindness and taking the time to answer my question I am beginning to realize in MY case I should maybe stop reading about side effects until any happen to me personally , I had a bad experience when I was told to take anti histamine for my allergies , no advice on what kind , so I assumed the more expensive were likely best ...was like id been tuned into the moon ...if I wasn't sleeping I was wound up with so much anxiety I thought I was going mad , would never have guessed a wee pill could affect me like that .
