Rehoming my cats

I have to rehome my cats after living with them for 7 years. Has anyone any stories of how their asthma improved after rehoming their pets?

Hi kitty,

Have always been allergic to cats, but lived with them alll my life. Got two new kittens three years ago, after my other cats had died (after reaching venerable ages both), and realised I was very allergic to them immediately, but children were already attached to them by then, so decided to tough it out. But she my asthma turned very bad last year, (have been presuming a kind of late onset, triggered by severe stress and menopause), doctor did allergy blood tests and it turned out I was grade 5 allergic to cats (top is grade 6) as well as allergic to dust mites, pollen etc, which I had no idea about (had never suffered from hay fever). So very sadly rehomed the cats with a relative, and yes, my peak flow has greatly improved, even though the asthma has not ever returned to pre-menopause control. But I couldn't imagine living with cats now, I do feel better - and safer, and the house is easier to clean and keep free of dust etc (got rid of all carpets and curtains too).

Interestingly, my kids have subsequently stayed overnight with their cousins where the cats now are, and both developed allergic symptoms, streaming eyes, nasal irritation etc, and we think that they also were always allergic but hadn't really realised. So we all feel better and even the kids are glad the cats aren't here any more.

Hi Winnie, so glad to hear that your peak flow increased once you rehomed your cats. My resolve to rehome them has weakened over night and we're going to try limiting them to certain rooms for the next few months.

It was amazing to read your reply as there are so many similarities with me. My latest allergy test showed me at level 5 with a figure of 83. It had previously been 43 a year ago. Your comments about the menopause are interesting as I'm 50 and at the start of it and am pretty convinced the weird things going on in my body are exacerbating my asthma.
