Rosie there are numerous threads about this topic if you use the search function. There are indeed.

Also, Rosie27 if you are a student, can you qualify for full help with health costs if under 19 or if not, with low income? See here for more details nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1874.aspx

Otherwise, as I think everytime I see this issue raised, we are lucky in this country with the NHS generally and prescription items being £7.85. So my answer to your question is, yes it is right we should pay. I know there are conditions under the medical exemptions scheme that do not have to pay but this was set in the 1950s. These days if everyone with a longterm condition qualified, the NHS and country would be in a far worse financial state.

There is the prepayment certificate which if one has more than 14 prescription items a year or four items in three months saves money. A three monthly PPC is £29.10 and a 12 month certificate is £104.00. See here for more details and to apply online nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1127.aspx or check at your doctors or pharmacy.

Just been to the Doctors and someone there was not a British resident and had to pay £30 for a consultation. Personally, I'm very glad we have the NHS and I think that prescriptions are good value, especially if you use the prepayment certificate.
