Hi all

I was just wondering if anyone wheezed or coughed after eating apples, I have had two coughing/wheezy episodes over the last week.

I had an interesting reply from a friend who I knew had an allergy to apples but wasn't sure what here is his reply:

I used to to get a sore tongue and roof of mouth, rhinitis, watery eyes and wheezing. Now even a small amount causes my tongue to swell alarmingly and breathing becomes difficult. The actual allergy I have is apple skin, though I found that teh apple gets infected so I stopped eating even peeled apples.

Apparently, according to teh consultant I saw at Salford Royal, the apple skin allergy is the next most common after peanuts (which I do not get). Sounds as if you may have joined my club, sorry to say. Skins though are a problem. I avoid the epidermis on raw nuts and skin on most fruits.'

Interesting.

I used to think I was odd having breathing difficulties after eating raw apple, once I became a patient at RBH, discovered it is quite common. Apparently if you are allergic to Silver Birch Pollen, it is common for you to have issues with apples. There is an enzyme common to both! I am luck though once apple has been cooked I can eat it, so that is fine by me as I can still partake in a wee drop of apple juice (the boozie kind)

I too get wheezy and cough after eating apples. I am ok eating cooked apples.

No problem with apples that I remember but certainly not particularly keen on eating as a whole fruit. Katina, didn't know that about silver birch - which I did react to as well on test - and apples but good news about the cooked and fermented kind :)

I too have been unable to eat apples raw without itching, wheezing sneezing, mouth swelling etc for many years. Cherries, pears, apricots and plums, also unccooked produce the same effect. I have been diagnosed with an allergy to 'early trees' some of which bear those fruits!
