Hmm, not really sure what you could do about that! OK it seems to be disturbing them, but it's not as though you're doing it on purpose - I'm sure your sleep isn't improved by night-time coughing either, and if you could manage not to then you would as it's worse for you!
Where are you GP/asthma nurse wise, as coughing in the night doesn't sound good from an asthma POV? Are they being helpful? Might be an idea to book an appt, unless you already have seen them and are just getting over something.
Re the neighbour - as there's not much you can do about it, don't know what you can really say! I guess if you see them, you could explain why and that it's not permanent, if they're reasonable about it.
Good grief. I would be tempted to write them a note sympathising about their sleep disturbance but pointing out that you are not coughing from choice. Mind you it would take me a very long time to compose such a note without being sarcastic and/or rude. Do they think you are doing this for fun?
Don't be embarrased. But if your cough is worse than normal do go and see your doc/asthma nurse rather than struggling on.
Hope you feel better soon.

Oh dear if I heard my neighbour coughing a lot, my first question would be are you okay, not you are keeping us awake! Thankfully I am in good company in my flat, the neighbour above me has a nebuliser and is always coughing and like wise the other way around. A polite word with your neighbour explaining that you cannot help it, I wouldn't apologise you can't help being unwell. And of course as others have said a visit to the GP is a good idea.
People have to accept that when residing in flats you will hear more everyday sounds, none of my neighbours are loud, but I hear all sorts you just learn to tune it out, and I think your neighbours need to do that.
Your neighbours dont sound very understanding, just a suggetsion but you could buy them some earplugs! Xx
But seriously, night time coughing is not good, hope you get it under control soon, best wishes Xx
Thanks for the giggle, about the ear plugs!
Big thank you for the ideas
Probably time to go back to GP /asthma nurse
As it's Uni vacation thats a good exucse to see my perents GP
who is more helpful
