inhaler technique

Is it acceptable for a 2 & 1/2yr old to use spacer with dummy in his mouth. I'm sure he would be better encouraged to mouth breath but mum says he will only take it with dummy in mouth. Not sure as to how much benefit he will receive breathing nasally. By the way he has a face mask which covers the dummy and his technique is otherwise good.

Hi,

I would say not. With the upper respiratory tract acting as first line of defense for infection and depending on the particle size of the medication, it is probable that very little medication is reaching its target.

I would promote the use of the spacer without the dummy for optimum drug deposition. Hope this helps.
