Just wondered how much exercise effected others. I've been playing 5 a side tonight and really worked hard but within 10 minutes of finishing I've had a terrible wheezy cough that has nearly made me sick. Had several puffs of salbutamol which did help the wheeze but now I'm left with a bad cough. Anyone else had this?
Although my asthma isn't classed as induced by exercise when I was able to I certainly noticed a difference after being in the gym if I hadn't taken a couple of puffs of salbutamol prior to starting. I would finish and feel OK (slightly breathless but able to talk which I think is what you are aiming )but would on occassion get this feeling of 'something' in my throat which was thick so the options were either try and swallow it or cough it up.
Most of the time I tried the coughing route. I did find that it was made worse if I didn't stay hydrated enough so tried to sip fluid whilst working out and that having a few cups of water (but not too cold as I found this could make symptoms worse) helped in addition to a few more puffs. Did try and see if there was a pattern eg what was the air conditioning set to, how many people were in the gym, or had the equipment/area been recently cleaned but didn't go much further as asthma became too bad to go to the gym.
Have you thought about looking at your peak flow before & after footie? might show a pattern and do take any salbutamol prior to exercising?
Sorry can't be of more help, let me know how you get on.
Take care

my asthma was diagnosed because i'd been to the gp after having trouble exercising. I found i'd struggle during running, i'd feel like i was breathing through a straw and would get this cough which was like there was something stuck at the back of my throat, in trying to cough it up, i wouldn't be able to breathe. Afterwards when i'd stopped running for an hour or so after, my lungs would feel like they were burning inside and i'd get a really chesty, phlegmy cough which would nearly make me sick! I use salbutamol before and after exercise now but i still get the chesty cough but not as bad. I wonder for me if its just that my asthma isn't controlled at other times, my gp thinks its purely exercise induced but i.m getting symptoms most days during the week when not exercising. Is your asthma otherwise controlled? Def try inhaler beforehand, and someone on here suggested straight after too.
ive not been told that my asthma is exercise induced, but i know that any exercise causes me to wheeze, cough, have phelm and sometimes vomit. when i think i might get ill before walking the dog i take an inhaler before i go out ,sometimes during and after as this tends to help.
Thanx for your replies. I always take inhaler before I exercise, usually have a few puffs halfway through then have some more about 10 mins after I've finished which is when the coughing starts. Other than exercise I'm pretty well controlled the only other time I get symptoms is when I get a chest infection and when I come into contact with cats
