Hi everyone,

I was just wondering.... Is montelukast only prescribed for hayfever symptoms/allergies which then trigger asthma or is it just another stage in asthma medication??

Thanks

Hello

I understood it was to prevent night cough in my case. But it has to be taken with steroid inhaler for it to work properly so guess its for asthma.

I got put on montilukast for night symptoms...but i stil find myself waking up coughing etc during night, i have now been increased on it with constltant to see if it makes a differemcd!

I also understand though that it can be there to control hayfever, but if its for that mort people take it in the mnrning also. I only take mine at night!

it is a leukotriene receptor antagonist so works best for allergic asthma by binding to one type of leukotrine (a fatty cell made by immune system that causes the inflamation) so in english is an anti-inflamtory!

From my understanding it works best in people with allergic asthma but has its uses in non-allergic asthma (yes can also be given for hayfever alone) it is on stage 3 on the guidlines as a add on and generally prefered over the theo's

Hi Smithy

I was put on Montelukast as an add-on. My peakflow went up 15% over night and stayed more or less at that number - my morning dips almost disappeared. The consultant said try it for a month then have a month off to check that I wasn't just having a good month. PF went down. Back on it after a month - straight up again! I'm a lazy person (64), don't exercise much but last week I went on a long walk with very steep paths. I was completely bowled over to discover that I could go up a path without stopping. I can't remember when this has ever happened before. I could feel as if I was breathing to the very bottom of my lungs. I haven't any allergies as far as I know. SO if you're offered it give it a try.

Hi smithy

I was put on Montelukast after an asthma attack a few years ago that was thought to be caused by pollen and the doctor said it was good for hayfever as well as asthma. I have had no problems with it BUT I did have an asthma attack on holiday a month ago which I suspect was caused by pollen - which I thought it would've prevented! - so I'm in two minds about whether it was actually doing me any good in the first place. And I still have to take antihistamines and nasal sprays for my hayfever so I was always a bit sceptical about whether it was working for me. I have heard of something that works on different leukotrines called Zafirlukast which I'm thinking of trying instead.

Singulair works a bit like anthistamines.

When i started it years ago, i was having probs sleeping and waking up sob a lot.

Singulair really helped me.

Im sure many asthmatics are on it already.

Im not aware of any side effects from it, but i can only speak for myself.

But it defo helps me.
