Moral of this story: When caught red-handed, do not bluster, as it makes you look like even more of a t*t than you did already.

The reason there are so many disabled bays is because the government decree there should be a certain proportion of bays which are disabled.

Personally, I think the person who took the photo and informed the press should be given a gold medal. I would have done it if I had seen our local MP parking in a disabled bay (no, they're not disabled).

What are the current guidelines about the number of dizzy spaces?

That is Outrageous! How dare he say there are too many disabled parking spaces! He should use the bus or a taxi to get to the station if he thinks the parking area is too small etc. Disabled people need spaces because they can't often use public transport or indeed some taxis if they need heavy wheelchairs etc.

During the week I do get a taxi because the car park for the station is the other side of the line and you have a steep hill to negotiate to get to the ticket office!

I do park there at w/e when I have time to negotiate the hill plus there aren't that many disables spaces anyway!

Perhaps the rail services for disabled people at that station are as such that , yes they can park but the station is not very friendly though it should be hence the vacant spaces??

Kate

Kate there are 230 spaces in the car park. He travels in the mainly at peak times on a weekday a time when the car park - simply because of the huge ticket price - is not full. As MP if he needed to use a taxi to get from his house he could claim that back. He also gets free 1st class rail travel so can make use of the 1st class only spaces. I love his I will take a camera and take photos to prove their are too many ""handicapped spaces"" so he is going to run a campagin to have disabled spaces removed is he? There are also 4 parent and child spaces along side the blue badge ones i note he does not feel the need to complain about those.

I also have a problem with being called handicapped does anyone else?

Bex

I have in addition just heard from another MP in the neighbouring constituency, he also uses Newton Abbot station and has never had a problem parking!

Bex

A very close friend of mine has a disabled Sticker in her car and She is Forever Giving out there is not enough spots!

The Person who Brought this to the eyes of the media should be given an award-That is Ridiculous that someone in a position of power should Abuse the spots!

Oh-I am annoyed now!!! ERRRRR!!!!!!

What bugs me is he thinks 6 out of 230 spaces are too many and he intends to photograph the spaces when they are not all being used. So he is campaigning against disabled spaces!

'Handicapped' is not a nice term - same as Invalid, to which I drew attention noisily to at work last week. The Ladies Loos were being painted and a nice printed note at reception requested that we used the Invalid toilet! There was a heated debate going on as to the context of said word - Invalid as in sick/ disabled or Invalid as in 'not valid'!

His language and attitude is appaling!

I prefere the phrase 'less able bodied'

Everyone, in a way has some sort of dis-ability or a differing ability to do things!

6 places isn't very many??

Wait until he is old & decrepid and needs to use a blue badge!

Will watch out for more in the media! It could get hot out there if things start to boil!

Kate

Personally I thought ""handicapped"" was a term that went out with the ark.

I'm not sure what the current guidelines regarding the number of dizzy spaces; but I am aware that a certain proportion of spaces on any car parking area should be allocated as disabled parking only (our local club had to comply with this recently; on a car park that has about 40 spaces there is just one disabled space, so I would think 6:230 would be about right).

I can't believe he's having a go at the person who let the press know! No, they weren't being sneaky, maybe they just knew what he's like & didn't want him having a go at them directly!

I have informed as many disabled groups locally as I can as well as disabled rights groups nationally, I have also made sure the national press are aware. Oh dear just goes to show when in hole stop digging.

Might it be worthwhile contacting David Camerons office?-Im sure this sort of attitude doesnt fit in with Mr Camerons attempts to drag his party into the 21st century!

Just went to station to collect a friend parked in the dizzy spaces and found a local TV camera crew filming. Its seems he has caused quite a row, it is in some of the nationals as well today so I suspect the tories are well aware of his faux pas.
