i would judge by your symptoms and your peak flow along side, if one unhappy go to doctor. As i say time and time again we are not aloud to give medical advise, if you are unsure see your GP!

hi glynis,

You had a similar question last week, and put your action plan into action, doubling up your meds. It's only been 3 days, so could still be a cold or slight chest infection. If you're not happy, then go back to your GP, but another day or two of using the double dose of preventer meds will either show an improvement or not. Just as long as you are not short of breath or have any other form of distress, then the GP's unlikely to do anything, but suggest wait and see, especially with a PEF at an all time best.

You know now when to use your action plan (hopefully) and you need to give it time to kick in, but as I've already said, any problems you're worried about, go back to your GP.

550?

What I'd give to get 550 as an all time high. Mine is still grumbling along below the 300s.

Seriously though, you have to give the change in routine just a little longer. OK?

nana xx

Thankyou everyone. Will give it longer with action plan.

Everything is still new to me and in time will get to know whats going on and first time put my action plan into action without going the docs but will go if dont improve. thanks

Hi Glynis

Do you mean that you're confused because you feel awful but your peak flow is really high? I've just come home from work having exhausted myself by going there. I've been doing reduced hours this week and didn't work on Monday and I'm still utterly bejiggered. I'm out of breath and tight chested and I've got a headache that smacks of oxygen deprivation.

Peak flow? 520. Just shy of my personal best.

I record my PF four times a day, along with symptoms and ventolin usage, but I only show my doctor the symptoms data or else she says, ""your peak flow's great so I'm not worried"". Well, I'm worried because I have NO LIFE. And now I have no money either now cos I'm out of sick pay. Grumble grumble etc.

I'm going to see a consulant on Tuesday so I'll see if I can get an answer to how I can possibly feel so bad with such a high peak flow.

Me too!

I am the same as you. My peak flow is fine and i am not wheezing but my chest is tight. I am not right and I know it. Not last week but the week before i was off for 2 days from work because i felt really crappy after a cold. I went to the docs, got some tablets which stopped the REALLY annoying cough i was having but when i finished them on thursday last week i was practically finished too! I have spent the weekend on the sofa trying to preserve energy but generally feeling crap. At work today but soooo tired and crabbit! Off to doctors tomorrow for a pre arranged checkup but hope he will give me something to get me over this latest struggle. I don't know about you but i get sooo disheartened when i feel like this. Totally melodramatic and wonder if I will ever be ""normal"" again!!

Confused!!

I have read all the posts on this thread and am MEGA confused... was diagnosed with mild asthma 3 years ago and told to do this, take that etc and record my peak flow, which was never really studied by docs. Average peak flow 450 but my asthma seems to be getting worse :S What does it actually test?

Wasnt sure whether to create new thread but thought it was relevent to this one.

Thanks

PS have only just been offered a spirometry test as well... i have little confidence in the docs as nothing was ever really explained to me and I should have had a spirometry test when I was first diagnosed.

Kayleigh, ignore PF's if you have symptoms, it's not a case of only taking action if you have falling peakflows and symptoms.

If you have increasing symptoms, is it the cold weather? personally I've doubled my steroids since middle December and maybe you need to go back to the GP and explain things to him and get an action plan drawn up. Blank version to fill in here

educationforhealth.org.uk/p...

Also don't think because you never had a spirometry test to start with that something was missed. Many don't get one, lots of practices don't have the equipment to offer it and really that need to change. Fortunately prices for the equipment are falling and are now around £1200

The PF chart you record probably is looked at, the figures aren't that important, more the patern they create and maintaining a reasonably stable condition is the aim, and also no symptoms.
