What next....

I am in Costa del Nhs for the 4 time in a month each time has been severe/life threatening attacks each time ITU have been involved and the dreaded intubation has been considered... managed to avoid it so far thanks to BiPap..

I am on every different type on asthma medication nebbing at least 4 hourly and sofa bound it seems. I am on 60mg of pred and when I start to reduce I get worse and back up to 60mg and still no help... I might aswell take smarties for all the use prednislone is doing! I am currently awaiting a trail of sub-cut bricynl but consultant wont start it until I am more stable! but I realy cant carry on like this yes I have avoiding intubation but for how much longer I have the kind of history where a scared Dr will intubate me as its better to do it when ok then when I stop breathing if you get me....

Have any body got any ideas on anything I could try to get me stable so I can a go back to work (hate being off sick goining mad) and get on sub-cut?

On the non drugs frount tried accupuncture, bukotyoko method, physio, pysch and speach and language!

Bizkid,

I am so sorry that you are in costa again.

I really do hope you get the treatment you need.

I do hope start to feel better soon.

Just as a short term measure, might they be willing to try stronger steroid injections. Either kenalog, or possibly hydro done my a nurse quite frequently. That could possibly improve you enough?

I am trying to get them to understand that pred isnt working... will se what the cons says tommorow! I dont care if i have to inject myself..... I know hydo can be done IM I used to do IM injections all the time!

Grrrr....... just been seen on ward round but a not very nice consultant.... said i shouldnt be coming in my gases have always been ok and dosnt understand why I feel so crappy! Wont change any meds and sending me home despite a peak flow of 220 (best around 500)

Bizkid,

Doesnt sound right does it to send you home yet ,

typical HNS.

I know myself and I know I am not set to go home I am know I will be back in...... they need to come up with a plan I wont leave my bed until they do something!

What a nightmare situation :(

Sending hugs your way,

Steroids by another route such as IM Hydrocortisone or coming in for some IV Methylpredinisolone can make a big difference if you are not absorbing Prednisolone properly.

As for the discharge with such a low peakflow that seems very wrong, is there an asthma nurse around you can speak to? Most of the time apart from in the more serious attacks blood gases don't tend to be affected apart from the carbon dioxide which can drop slightly as you're breathing so fast cos of the attack to keep your oxygen levels up, so if they're ok it doesn't necessarily mean you didn't need to come in. If you don't feel well and don't sound it in addition to a poor peakflow then discharging you like this does not seem like a good idea.

Hope you feel better soon and stick to your guns xxxxx

Well so far they havent dragged me out kicking and screaming (if I could) my peak flows arent moving much and nebbing 2 hourly and I do need them my sats are around 93% still which is strange for me!

I am meant to be seeing the resp nurses but no sign and meant to be seeing my local cons but also no sign.... managed to read my notes and it dosnt say for certain home so a little more chilled but nurses got in in there heads I am going home!
