After my dramas over the last few weeks, I think it would be really interesting to see how many people actually do not wheeze! So let the battle commence!

I do not usually have a wheeze either

wheeze

Sometimes I don't wheeze and some doctors can be rude about it and other times I do wheeze suddenly. I am a little puzzled by it all.

gill

nope, i've never wheezed.

Famous wheeze...? hmmmm

Hi all

I too dont always wheeze and I turned completely blue in January before anyone took me seriously....its outragous and i think its only when you see a true specialist- which i do now, you are later told you can have any of one common symptom for it to be potentially serious and wheezing is only one common sypmton- so my question is why do not more a&e or ward nurses know this!!!! My triggers are mainly linked to allergies ( i am severe atopic) and I have had different tell tell signs to every reaction.

Hope this helps

Kind regards

Carrie

When my son was diagnosed at the age of 7 our gp at the time said that not all asthmatics wheeze and if you actually waited for a wheeze some people would never be diagnosed. When i was diagnosed my gp said he could hear me wheeze when i walked in the room!!!!

I have never wheezed and my peak flow doesn't reflect my symptoms. Drs and asthma nurses are always confused with my asthma and it gets very boring describing it. I get extra stressed when my asthma is out of control (which it is now) because of the reaction I get at the Drs.

I only wheeze when in an acute sever attack and disappears quickly

me too - i think the wheeze should be taken off as a definite symptom and more emphasis on the fact that there are variations of asthma.

I used to wheeze and was taken much more seriously than I am now that I don't wheeze, which is annoying as I'm actually worse now than I used to be!

It depends on the state of my lungs. Sometimes my lungs are so tight I don't wheeze til the lungs improve. The physio summed it up nicely. If lungs tight less air movement. If less movement then no wheeze..,, so when being examined and dr says mmm no wheeze just ask re air movement in ur lungs. That usually reinforces asthma not great !!!!!

My other problem is that my saturations don't drop below 95%. This confuses many a dr. But when u don't respond to nebulisers you already have their attention .

I don't tend to have a wheeze, but have gone slightly blue around lips, my husband said he has heard me wheeze occasionally though very quietly, its usually chest pain that I get and shortness of breath.

Me too - I have never wheezed. I think that around 10% of asthmatics don't.

That is a good idea to ask about air movement in the lungs. They should also notice that breathing out is a lot longer than breathing in. I find it worrying that doctors don't take a lack of wheezing seriously as in the most severe (life-threatening attacks) you won't get enough air movement to have a wheeze.

no wheeeeeeeeeezei to have not got a wheeze

no wheeeeeeeeeezei to have not got a wheeze

I do not usually wheeze, just can't breathe and cough and my whole body aches and my legs go like jelly and I get really scared. xxxxxx

I rarely wheeze, but can cough for Britian!

Having a bit of trouble now, short of breath, cough, exhusted but no wheeze.

I've just been put on a short course of prednisone, hope it helps, I gotta get back to work.

No wheeze

This is my first time contributing to this site but I have read it regularly. I don't wheeze unless I have a chest infection. My GP comments on this regularly even when I had difficulty talking due to constant coughing.

I am Brittle and rarely wheeze unless I have a yucky gunky chest infection.

On my protocol I have written that I do not wheeze when I am really bad.

A Lack of wheeze can be a sign of a silent chest which indicates severe attack and that you need urgent help. Hardly any air shifting. BUT it does need to be more recognised that some asthmatics don't wheeze in general........

I dont wheeze either, i think that probably contributes as to why it took 6 months to diagnose my asthma! Although on a couple of occasions my hubby has heard me wheeze in my sleep when ive been quite rough with it.

hi folks

I have bumped up the national stragety thread and the no wheeze thread!

Have a read and print out national stragety and take to your GP, A and E and other medical people highlighting the part that says not all asthmatics wheeze!

THe more we can tell people the more they will be aware of it!

PLumie

I very rarely wheeze when I'm bad with my asthma!

When my asthma's been at it's worst, I haven't wheezed, my specialist tells me this can happen during an acute flare up. In fact, there have been times when I have wheezed noisily but feel OK. I've been turned away from Casualty because of no wheeze, I've been advised if this happens again I insist on a peak flow check. WHEN are they going to resolve this!

I never wheeze. It's caused so many problems getting people to take me seriously, the first GP i saw didn't really believe me and left me bouncing on and off pred courses every few weeks for a while, insisting I was fine. I changed GPs and she took me seriously and got things sorted out, but still does the whole ""but you're not wheezing"" thing. I've been told to stop coughing and given codeine in A+E and sent away only to end up back the next night where I was briefly admitted. Every time I've been to A+E/ OOH I've had the same response that they've never come across an asthmatic that doesn't wheeze and only a few times have I been given a salbutamol neb at A+E (although that's different at my GPs)- every other time it's taken a lot of faffing around wondering why I'm not wheezing (despite all other symptoms being there) before anything has been done.

My daughter doesn't wheeze but trying to tell your average GP that not all asthmatics wheeze is like banging your head against a brick wall. Constantly hearing ""Well, there's no wheeze so I'm not concerned.

Its rare for me to wheeze so much so that gp told me couldn't have asthma cause didn't wheeze that hasn't stopped me ending up in itu 3x the last one in april this year for a week lucky for me practise nurse and con believe me. some gp's just need to be educated as same gp told me more recently that couldn't be dairy intolerant cause wasn't as a baby doh i eat dairy foods and get really upset stomach stay away from them and am fine.

the amount of times people have posted that they've been turned away from a+e worries me so much. I.m lucky in that so far i.m a newbie and i haven't had a bad attack but if/when it does happen, i.m gonna be sacred senseless without having to worry whether i wheeze or not. This problem really does need addressing!

Hi, i've had asthma for 12 years and haven't wheezed at all during that time. I have a very croaky throat when at worst and breathlessness but no wheeze.

I rarely wheeze, but thankfully I have never been turned away by my local hospital but I am so fed up with the ambulance crews treating me like I am wasting time cause I am not wheezing. Isnt it enough that I am coughing so much that I cant talk and that I am short of breathe and feel like I am being crushed by a family of elephants. And then when you get to the hospital the nurses are really good then some doctor comes along and does the whole - your not wheezing so your fine routine. As others have said on here when is this issue going to be addressed. I hate being asthmatic and do not like being treated as a time waster just cause I am not 'text book asthmatic'. Sorry folks moan over, needless to say I am having yet another exacerbation and as usual my con dont care.....

When I have excercise induced /allergic asthma I wheeze with normal asthma day to day I don't wheeze. However I have found out recently that I have chronic pulmonary aspergilloisis which could explain the tight chest and cough but no wheeze on a normal day to day basis! So now ever so slightly confused until I work out what is causing each of the reactions

It's very annoying to read all this about some of us not being taken seriously!!

I've been a non wheezer until recent pneumonia but even now I only have the slightest wheeze that probably onlyvi can hear.

I had an attack at work recently which actually started off with a cough and audible wheeze but by the time the ambulance arrived the wheeze was gone.

I'm glad they didn't question it though.

Every attack can be so different in symptoms!!

Why can't AUK go on tv or inform uk's surgerys about this wheeze problem?????

Please!???

xx

I have been asthmatic for 30 yrs now and brittle fo 13 of them and find my symptoms can rea\lly vary.

Sometimes i can be very short of breath tight but no wheeze othertimes i can wheeze away but not feel to bad!!!

I have never had any problems in a and e but sometimes my con canget abit funny as can the junior drs as they go - 'chests clear so your sats and pf should be better'!!!! i wish!!

I do think that more medics are becoming aware the not all asthmatics wheeze but it should be across the board and also that they make sure to look out for the ominous silent chest which one dr missed with me and i ended up being vented!

I also tend not to wheeze, my main symptoms are tight chest, very breathless and coughing. I to feel that you aren't taken seriously because you don't wheeze as all asthmatics are meant to wheeze, fortunately my friends and family know when i need help and i have an excellent G.P.

People please print out the new national strategy and take it to your GP's to A and E's to consultants and give them copies it is the only way we are going to get the whole health department to know and listen to us that not all asthmatics wheeze. If we do not act then nothing will happen!

If all the non wheezers act then it will help others. I almost wonder if we could get our stories in the media? If we all wrote to our local newspapers maybe? Or if we wrote to someone high up in medical services?

Plumie

I agree Plumie! Is there anyway AUK could do anything?

I also do not have a wheeze, my main symptoms are very breathless, coughing and tight chest. Fortunately for me A&E have never turned me away whilst having an asthma attack the last doctor that I saw there asked me if I do wheeze when I replied no he said not all asthmatics do so lets hope that the word is starting to get into the right places

I vary, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

I had severe asthma as a child, hospitalised 3 times under the age of 5years old. My symptoms always included wheezing. As I grew older my asthma was less severe, to the point that I stopped my inhalors in my early 20's. After visiting my parents house (damp, smokers, pets) I felt symptomatic and decided to see my GP. I got a right telling off and that I'm more likely to suffer a sudden and severe asthma attack. This scared me straight and I am ""compliant"" with my medication 95% of the time. I've been living in London for the past two years now and I feel like my asthma is worse but I was not really sure as there was no wheezing! This post has helped me to understand that my asthma is sill bad, only the symptoms have changed.

when my asthma is playing up mildly i wheeze.

It gets worse im silent/if its there it isnt noticeable.

which can be very annoying cos people tend to fuss more when i know im going to be ok..

I find this topic really interesting! I myself do wheeze, so haven't really has a problem but i know doctors down where i live don't always look for a wheeze. During one admission i asked if i could be discharged cause i wasn't wheezing anymore (and it wasn't a silent chest) and the dr. said that asthma can occur even when there's no wheeze, so that's not a big factor in there decisions.

I only wheeze when I have a (thankfully now infrequent) chest infection - otherwise I'm a cougher.
