hi all
just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to make swallowing capsules easy.
i usually have paracetamol capulets that can be broken up so there arent a problem
but my gp has just prescribed me some meds that are capsules (unfortunatley long term) so i need to learn how to swallow then as they have to be swallowed whole
i may sound completely strange
but help and advice will be greatly appreciated

Plenty of water, aim the capsule so that the wider part goes in first. this stops the edges of the two parts catching. Swallow as if you are eating normal food!
If you can take them with food try coating them in honey!

My daughter had terrible trouble taking tablets but if you use a water bottle with a spout type top that you can direct and squeeze the water out, it helps to stop the tablet wandering around your mouth. Also try putting the tablet on your tongue and then stick your tongue out and push the tablet back on your tongue with your teeth. The further back it is the easier it is to swallow.

Try practicing with smarties/tictacs
The way I learned: hold an antibiotic capsule in your mouth, trying to swallow it for so long that it bursts.
You'll never do it again, promise. Utterly foul taste.
Seriously (no, really) - apparently if you put the capsule towards the back of your mouth, then take a gulp of water and at the same time try to reach as far into the air as possible with your left hand...this works, allegedly. If it doesn't, at least you've given someone a good giggle in watching you try.

I practiced with small sweets or baked beans .... Though if it is really really difficult you could always get a liquid form of the medicine!
Ive recently been put on liquid calcium meds - they are fizzy calcium tabs you dissolve in water as i really cant get on with the normal calcium tabs! These are much much better!

lol cathbear I know what you mean about the horrible taste! Recently when I was in hospital the doctors wanted me on amoxicillin but because I'm allergic to the colourings used in the capsules and syrup the nurses had to split the capsules open and mix the powder with water.... it was the most disgusting thing ever!
Try Food! - Sorry it's a bit gross!
OK this has worked for me for the last 20years! I cannot take tablets of any sort without gagging!
Eat a piece of food, to start with try something like toast, chew the food, open you mouth and place the tablet/capsule in the food - you may have to take it out of your mouth or you may be able to fold the food around it with your tongue. Take a deep breath, then just swallow. For some reason your brain just excepts it's food and it works. I recently taught this trick to my mum who has never swallowed a tablet in her 62 years!!!!
In time you will be able to do it with any food and far more discretly! GOOD LUCK

My DH has trouble with capsules. Takes about 20 a day and prefers to take them with food to assist swallowing.
Me? I had hayfever tablets the size of a big liquorice comfit when I was twelve and my dad would use a teaspoon to dig out strawberries from strawberry jam to bury the capsules in for me.
After a surfeit of jammy strawberries, I taught myself to take the tablets with water.
after a few days i have now taught my self to swallow with just water
so thankyou suggestions really did help me to do
