hi laurenjayne,

I'm the same as you at moment I have a slight chest infection & slight bronchitis am on antibiotics, prednisone etc saw dr. on wednesday my pf was up which was surprising even he was amazed but i put it down to using a lot of ventolin.

I've always wondered why the same.

It'ss probably for the same reason that I can do my peak flow first thing in the morning and it is a really good 390/400. I take all my meds as prescribed and potter around for half an hour or so and notice chest is feeling tight and achey, I re-check peak flow and it is dropping rapidly so have to take ventolin. Another time i can have a low pf in the morning and do nothing more than my normal meds yet an hour later it can be normal. I have given up trying to explain why. Mind you my GP says 400 is what I should be aiming at but I know my real normal is 430 which I can get easily and regularly when I have managed to have several weeks in a row of no allergic reactions (sadly that is a rare occasion at this time of year).

Also you hardly ever go to your GP early in the morning and last thing at night! ie generally when ure peak flow is at its lowest

I find that it is lower with their cardboard mouthpieces! Also if they are using spirometry- it is easier to get good spirometry peak flows because there is nor resistance from the disc that moves. Also peakflow is only one measurement - you need to take others things into account like exercise tolerance, breathlessness etc.

I can go and say that my pf has been 270 and then do a pf there at 350 and you feel stupid!!
