Hey peeps,

Was just curious to know how peoples works react to time off for medical appointments?

You might be able to guess mine are being awkward!!

Haveto say have no probs at all in fact they are less bothered about it than what I am.

BNFL (or whatever we call ourselves these days) are ok for actual hospital appointments but expect you to ""do"" Doctors appointments in your own time, but have made one or two exceptions for me in the past.

I've had referrals to two different specialists - one for my asthma and for for panic attacks. Trying to get time off is so bad esp as i work monday to friday 6-3 or 7-4.

Its really rubbish esp my work have decided to move me depts as they feel its having a negative impact on my health (it is BIG TIME!!!) yet they are being so unhelpful and unsupportive and just get me stressed constantly (when stress is one of my triggers) esp last week i had an early finish arranged for an appointment and then told 30minutes before the end that i couldn't go!!

Have employers not got a legal responsibility to let you off for appointments?

The school where I teach are great, if I have anappointment, they cover my class and I go. To add to this, my eldest daughter hhas cerebral palsy so you can probably imagine how many appointments she has! They are great about this too. I do tend to give up alot of non contacts etc and do extra duties at lunchtime to stop myself feeling too guilty. I am currently signed off till the end of this week because I had a chest infection and the asthma kicked off big time. Work have been great but then how can I teach PE when I cant hop let alone run without coughing!!!! I cannot believe that in this day and age, employers get away with any of this!

Laurenjayne, I think I saw that you worked for tesco?? I worked for them over the summer and they said that they had to let me have time off for hospital appointments. I was even allowed late to work some days when I'd forgotten to get prescriptions, I was let home when I'd forgotten to take my meds. I found my biggest problem was that I worked on the tills and wasnt able to get off of them quick enough when I was bad.. Which dept u on?

I'm on Price Integrity. I am lucky enough to have an agreement never to go on tills - slight bit of asthma and i panic about being trapped.

I'm soo confused and don't know what to do - was so busy yesterday been doing a two man job alone all week so i never left an hour early to go to my appointment, hardly got a break today and got an informal discussion for not working fast enough!! When i know for a fact my work rate is fine at the moment!!

Yesterday my asthma was playing up and one of the managers asked me if i wanted to go and take five minutes out as he wanted me to sort myself out - done that and got pulled up for skiving!!

and even better was so stressed today i took an asthma attack and a manager, two collegues and first-aider were great and then another manager came in and started questioning me about what was going on, how long do i need, will i be able to go back to work - why do that and make me talk when i'm having an asthma attack? Then proceed to give me an informal discussion - asthma is serious and they treat it like a joke.

I am seriously ready to walk out although in reality i can't as i have bills etc - they have even written me a not so positive reference because i was signed off for the two weeks!

i'm sorry - rant over!!!

I have been job hunting for hours - i work mon - fri 6am-3pm at moment and work have decided form next week i can do mon-sat (wed off) 1pm to 10pm. I can't do it and i do not know what to do
