Asthma in the evening......

Hey there!

OK. I find my asthma gets worse in the evening. Its relatively ok during the day (though I am going to go back to my GP to get a preventer, am on ventilin only at the moment), but at night, not always but a large portion of the time, it does get worse.

Anyone know why that should be? I can only think that its either anxiety or some kind of allergic reaction. I would be interested to hear what peoples views are - I mean, is it common for asthma to get worse at night or at certain times of the day?

Cheers, guys. :-)

asthma can often get worse throughbthe night as the levels of steroids your body prodces naturally reduces. peak tmes for this are generaaly between 2-5 am though of course this can vary among individuals. other things that might cause an evening or night time dip are things like allergies to dustmites, of which there tend to be plenty in bed and the bedroom generally. also if you suffer from hayfever then you may be effected by pollens falling in the air as the air cools in the evening.

don't know if any of this helps.

It might also get worse as you get tired and your defence levels drop.

you're not alone...

hi,

If it makes you feel better, i am the same. My asthma is mostly ok during the morning and afternoon but gets worse in the evening and late evening. I do sometimes have problems in the morning and during the day but mostly late evening. I did speak to my nurse about it and she has no idea why, we did infact have a bit of a laugh about me being awkward :oD (i didn't know she knew me so well!).

It might be worth having a chat with your asthma nurse of GP see if you can rule out anything like dustmites.

Good luck with it and try not to worry :)

hi moose, like you iam also different and if going to just go off tend to do it in the afternnon or evening. people say it is unusual , but it is just us,

take care george x

Hi Feenix,

Your definitely not alone, my asthma rears its ugly little head in the evenings as well especially when you get comfortable for a good nights sleep and it doesn't let you! I think there can be lots of reasons like alergies or stress or silly things like if its too cold or too warm. What I could suggest to you that I think might help is if you get non-allergenic bed linen they are specifically designed for people with allergies and asthma. Hope it helps and your feeling better.

Hey, guys.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions and good ideas I have received - I will be trying all of them!

Going to make an appointment with my gp next week and see whats what. I'm not worried about it really - more curious to see if there is a reason behind it and how I can deal with that.

Cheers again - I really appreciate all of your help and advice. :-)

hello my asthma is a pain for evening /nighttime if money is tight and providing ur duvet is not featered take in down to a loacal lurrderrett that might help or if its a low tog some normal washing machines can handle them. Last month there was a wash ur duvet day i could not blive that some peps have never washed theres!

A good way off cutting dust down is to wet wipe this is better than normal dusting as the dust sticks to the cloth instead of just being moved in to the air.

Both these ideas are cheap and might help u get some sleep. I find that when i have had a few bad night once the asthma has settle i still can't sleep coz on thinking i will get woken up again. then i end up in that all too well cicle asthma keeps me up so i get tired the triedness then brings on the asthma then start poping steroids so asthma gives up then i still can't sleep and so on grrrrr
