I use normal Macleens toothpaste, and I have been finding the taste and smell quite strog lately (specially during the time when I had couple of chest infections in the last couple of months, which induced coughiing).
Is there a chemical in the toothpaste/s, thats affecting me?
Has anybody else come accross this?

Hi there newengland, I have loads of allergies to obscure things including preservatives, of which there are in most toothpastes. If you're similarly effected then it could be the sodium laurylth sulphate that's doing it (the sulphate aspect of it being the problem as this is a preservative as well as the foaming agent in the toothpaste). Alternatively it could be the mint as this contains natural preservatives in the form of benzoates. If it's the sulphates that are causing the problem then you would most likely be finding difficulty with lots of other toiletries such as shampoo and soap as most of these also use the sodium laurylth sulphate, but there are one or two out there that don't.
If you are having problems of this kind it's probably best to ask your GP for a referral to an immunologist/allergy specialist rather than to assume you definitely have a problem with these things. If you are experiencing problems due to the preservatives then it is a life-changing thing to get your head around as it effects so many different aspects, not least food. If it turns out this is your problem then you will need advice and guidance to adapt to the changes that will need to be made, but if you need any other help with this then do pm me as I have a lot of personal experience with it. As I say, ask your doc for a referral to a specialist if need be.
Yes our family have a lot of problems with standard toothpastes aimed at the UK market which have many more chemicals than are needed but many of the French ones are much better - Boots and Amazon both sell Elgydium (original variety) which is good - the French supermarket SuperU do an own brand range which are cheap and wonderful - I buy their one called Plantes it only costs about €1 per tube. or try health food shops ...
