cough

Should I be worried if I am coughing all day long, sometimes with mucus? My GP doesnt appear to be but I feel this is an indication that my asthma is not under control. I am currently keeping a diary of how many times per day I cough. Does anyone else have this problem?

sometimes gp's just dont care enough to help, i am having chest pain regulary which diffuclty breathing everyday and have mucus in chest and throat, and my meds are not working, and both asthma nurse and doctor did not do anything to help, if i was you i would keep on to them

hi have you got any cold or flu symptoms? if not and its not a reaction to something or a chest infection it could be your asthma but then again you shouldnt really be coughing i would have thought-well certainly not all day if its under control. maybe the doc could try you on medication for the phelm which might make it feel easier to have a productive cough without choking.

My 13 yr old son had a bad cough for many months - consultant and GP said it was mucus trickling back from his nose (he's got rhinitis) and there wasnt anything they could do. When we saw Ear Nose and Throat consultant he said it wasnt that - son was coughing because he's got asthma! He did add (more helpfully) that the throat and airways can get very irritated with the cough, and further coughing becomes almost a reflex action.

The GP eventually prescribed cough linctus Pholcodine and that helped within a few days of him taking it. He still coughs a lot but that prolonged hacking cough has cleared up.

Keep a record of your peak flow, and the coughing, and if things dont improve, go back to your GP and explain your concerns. And as Jay39 has said, there is medication to facilitate the production of phlegm. Good luck and I hope things improve for you.

I coughed day and night (with a frothy white production) until I got a preventer inhaler, after 2 days of using it the cough stated to clear up, after 12 days it had gone completely - now I just use the preventer if I start to cough and it relieves it quickly

Hi hev52,

I would certainly go back to your surgery and tell them how bad your cough is.

I've always had rather a cough than wheeze with my asthma since being a teenager but have had a bad cough since the beginning of august. The gp and asthma nurse tried a few things but nothing helped now my consultant has changed my latest treatment which I just started yesterday. He said it was an asthma cough.

It's important to get the right treatment so maybe a different preventer etc might sort things out for you? Or have you been exposed to a new trigger?

Hope you'll soon get rid of your cough.

Love Lydia x
