treatment when addmitted into hospital..!! :(

Hi everyone..x

How are you all? well i am just here to have a wee rant, as i am a severe asthmatic, and i am admitted into hospital quite alot. latly the treatment i have been receiving in hospital, is horrible. everytime i go to A and E, the nurses can be reallly horrible and say ""oh its her again"" theres one nurse in particilar that is always nasty and makes me even more anxious when am in a middle of an asthma attack because way i am treated in hospital. i was in hospital recently, took a bad allergic reaction as with it being summer asthma gets really with high polin and things. i phone NHS 24, and they wanted me to get seen by emergency doctor, so my brother takes me down, n then the doctor sends me down to A and E, as soon as i get in door this particular nurse comes in and Says "" oh its u again"" my brother had to go away as was middle of the nite, and he had to be up with the kids in morning, i new id be getin kept in anyway. i was sitting in A and E for 5 hours, they never had me up on the bed sitting up they had me sitting in this really uncomfy chair, when i asked for a nebuliser, she says no your hyperventalating, who wouldnt if they couldnt breath but thing is i wasnt i was really struggling to breath. the medical consultant then comes in to see me and he was like "" why havent you had a nebuliser and on oxygen, i was so upset at this point, i was struggling even more. the doctor then goes to nurse "" whys this girl not had a nebuliser, her reply was i thought she was hyperventalating, he replied No she is not, get her one now, she is struggling"" when i went for a chest xray , as another nurse took me down to xray, i come back and she says to nurse"" is she getin kept again and her eyes roll up! she made me feel so horrible, as i wouldnt be there if i didnt need to be. i came out of hospital really deprest because of treatment i received.

Now everytime i am unwell and no i need to go into hospital im hesitant as im scared about the way im going to be getting treated. it still really upsets me and i took an asthma attack last week and i didnt phone 999, i ended up phoning my doctor, as i said i dnt want to go into hospital after way im gettin treated he came out to my house and nebulised me and was hesitant to go in, he wanted to admit me but i said no.

doctor told me to put a complaint in, and i am seriously thinking about it because like he says i am a severe asthmatic and its not my fault, yes im over weight but thats due to being on steroids day and day out and i do try. i have told myself im not standing for getting treated like this as i dont deserve it or do i!? i dnt no!

sorry just needed to share this, and see what you all think, do u think i should write that complaint? has anyone else been miss treated in hospital because of there asthma?

katie that's awful. It was unprofessional of the nurse to behave like that apart from being unpleasant for you. You really do need to put in a complaint. If this means that she gets more training or better still moved to another department then that would be better for you and others in the long run. Best Wishes

Hi Katie, yes I jolly well do think you should put in that complaint, the way you were treated is outrageous. Most nurses are fab but you're not alone in encountering a couple of totally unprofessional and uncaring ones who quite frankly are a disgrace to their profession.

I see you're very young (from my point of view anyway) and of course it's scary for you to be admitted with severe asthma, anyone would be anxious. You would think a nurse worth his/her salt would realise that and try to reassure you, not make you feel like s****

If this experience has made you reluctant to go to hospital when you need to, well that says it all doesn't it? You must point this out in your letter of complaint.

As for being overweight, let them try being on steroids and unable to exercise much, &see how much weight they put on. Be polite but assertive Katie and get that complaint in. I would address it to the consultant in charge of the A&E dept and if you can, identify the individuals concerned.

Good luck

polly

hi polly,

thank you for your message:) im going to get on case tomoro, and start writing the letter, the problem is though is i dont no the nurses name that is always nasty to me.

i was think if happens again and the women is still treating me like crap, ill make sure i get her name, then put complaint in, as would be better if i had the name eh? or could i still put complaint in?

it honestly left me so deprest at one point i just wanted it all to end but i managed to pull myself back up thank god!

i dont just have my asthma to deal with, got epilepsy, asthma, bowel, bladder problems and theres more too much to list. plus hospital no my history but that certian nurse always manages to bring me down by her comments!

Katie do not let this horrid woman get you down. You have right on your side. If you describe her age & appearance in your letter & say exactly when you were in the dept, I'm sure they'll know who she is. I doubt you're the only one who's had problems with her.

Just state in the letter exactly what happened and how she made you feel. From my experience, you will probably get some sort of ""fob off"" letter back saying they're sorry you feel you didn't get good treatment blah blah blah, but there's no doubt this nurse will be remonstrated with and made to understand she cannot treat patients this way.

chin up Katie, be strong! x

Hi Katie,

a lot of us like you who are 'frequent flyers' can have similar experiances, i have in the past and it does make you nervous sometimes, i too have complained in the past, and things do get resolved or at least looked into.

Sometimes when debating to go in or not i have left it a bit too late, as you know if you are not too bad you get left!! but if you leave it too late it is all a bit too scary!!

hope you get sorted,

g x

Katie this is totally unsatisfactory, yes there are some patients who waste NHS resources on a regular basis, but as someone with a diagnosed condition like severe asthma, this one nurse who is making you unhappy is highly unprofessional in her conduct. The only way to deal with her kind is an official complain to the director of nursing, asking for a full apology from the nurse herself in writing. You will accept no other as her conduct has been repeated on many occasion, and her behaviour noted by a doctor when she did not nebuliser you when necessary. This way you know this nurse has been quizzed on her conduct. Let us know how you get on. Don't be afraid, if I have had to do this in the past I have!

Another frequent flyer.

I had this at my 1 hospital where al the nurses reated me like crap, so ea ch time im poorly i now if i get an ambo i request not to go there, i also had my consulant change, and he was shockd at how i was being treated.

My new hospital is fantastic now though, i no longer get abandond in a corridor, i get canulated straight away as a n e al no my viens shut dwn wen severe attack, and i get plumbed with al drugs straight away, and because i am a frequent flyer at the moment, ak the staff r extremly friendly.

I do unfortunatly stil get the muppet doc who says o but her sats are fine...great thing was a nurse who knos me wel said, as u have just sat and read her notes, u would have ready her sats never drop and she always goes into respiratory acidosis. He was lost for words!

I guess u get muppets every where tho hey!

I always remember my consultant and physio sayin to me... They may look after me, and no the text book stuff etc...but they dont have asthma or problems with their chest so there not going to say they hve been in this situation and start dictating wats right and wrong and they wont suggest all asthmatics are what is said in the text book

..because were not...each asthmatic is different!!! Shame not all docs think lile that hey!!!

X

I am 'a frequent flyer' and try to go to a hospital that knows me because a bad experience at another hospital put me off getting assistance and hence put my life at risk. I spoke to my consultant and he agreed that I may need to attend the A+E if time is of essence, but he detailed my other perferences.

You shouldn't have to put up with this bad behaviour. So try to get it resolved so your confidence is not eroded.

hi,

You would be well with in your rights to complain xxx

When i went AnE once ,I had a neb ,xray and had to have bloods and they put in a cannula in

my arm and a young nurse said to me go wait out there and I had to sit in the Waiting area

with a gown on and cannula in and felt out of place and uneasy as not near to doc or nurse.

They wernt busy as was a few bays empty.

A male doctor came past me and said come sit in here and took me to a empty bay and he did question

why I was told to sit out there.

4 hours later and more nebs ,was told blood results and cannula out and home with steroids and Augmentin. xxxx

I am sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience - I had the same when I was about 10 and in hospital. One nurse was really unpleasant and I was very nervous of her. Shame that this sort of thing is still happening some 40 years on... But as Charlie said, unfortunately there are muppets in all walks of life.

I would complain, it doesnt matter that you dont know her name. Sounds like she needs some retraining.
