does anyone else sometimes have probs with their asthma even without showing signs of a wheeze??
asked my doc once about this and he said it can happen....just that it's happened to me a couple of times..tight chest and problems breathing but I feel that I shouldnt be bothering A&E with it due to the fact that I don't have a wheeze

I almost never wheeze - I cough then get so breathless I don't move enough air to wheeze, with little in between.
It is a recognised phenomenon that sometimes asthmatics don't wheeze during an attack.
If you feel tight and breathless, don't worry about getting seen by a+e or GP - they would rather see you and reassure if you arent too bad than see you when you have waited too long and are really sick

Lots of asthmatics don't wheeze. You really should get checked out as I don't wheeze cos I am not shifting the air to create a wheeze, in an attack my lungs are almost totally silent with little air movement at all, a very serious situation. If I am wheezing I know I am moving air, it might sound worse but I am actually comforted by a wheeze.

My asthma took years to be diagnosed because I just had incessant coughing particularly at night. I occasionally wheezed when doing my sport but never at a time when the doc could see/hear it. It wasn't until 10 years later when I had an asthma specialist GP that he diagnosed asthma. By then I had a regular pf of about 250 whereas now on a good day I get above 400.
I also rarely wheeze even during attacks, was like that for years when I was little before a proper diagnosis as they didn't believe it could be asthma. Since then have found lots of peopel the same!
i do wheeze alot,but once i went to see the nurse at my doctors when i thought i was having an attack and she told me i couldnt be having an attack because i wasnt wheezing,but my con says you dont have to wheeze all the time.so i was very confused,but i know quite a few people that dont often wheeze.

I quite often get no wheeze and last year keft it too long to seek help which resulted in a near fatal attack a stay in a high dependency unit and a week in hospital. Never trust to luck if you are struggling seek help. Thankfully I have mine under reasonable control but it still hits back now and then. A&E don't mind being bothered it saves them a lot of trouble if you get there early enough to do something.

A&E know me too well i'm sure people at your A&E wouldn't mind getting to know you if they know they can help prevent the risk of a fatal asthma attack
ive just come outta hospital , i di wheeze only slightly for 5-10 min then it would go, my peak flow was well down and my chest sooo tight i no exactly how u feel.
i was told to got to a+e as its better to be safe than sorry !

i very realy wheeze, but am extremly brittle. the cons once told me thats when the problem are bad as there isn't enough air going in and out to cause a wheeze so don't hesitate to get help if you think you need it better to be safe than sorry.

I frequently have problems without the wheeze which is why I think it can be quite hard for people to understand quite what it means being asthmatic and often feel really tired when my asthma is playing up
Things that can help you avoid problems are some the basics i.e. avoiding dairy and replacing with soya milk (though I can't get my tastebuds around that for cups of tea) and also avoiding ice-cold drinks which can act as a trigger.
