Hi I have only been recently diagnosed too and the same happened to me. I was a relatively fit and healthy PE teacher until I started getting chest infections every month (have currently just got over infection number 12 in 14 months). It takes time for the asthma nurse to find out which inhaler works best for you so don't worry, Im 5 months in and now on inhaler number 4.

Hope this helps :-)

Yes that sounds like me too, had bad chest infections since November takes me ages to get rid of them. The brown inhaler has helped but she said she will try me on the purple one, but i was just curious to how bad my asthma was, my Fiancee only has to use his brown inhaler, so I'm gathering mine is worse than his.

Thanks for you help

much appreciated, nice to know i'm not alone in getting these chest infections constantly.

Thats exactly how I felt, these discussion boards are so reassuring. Just persevere and don't get worried if things are not fully going to plan. PM me if you need any other advice.

If you want to see where you are with your asthma the British Asthma Guidelines are a useful guide. The link is as follows:

sign.ac.uk/pdf/sign101.pdf

Malawi, I was trying to find a copy of those and for some reason couldn't - thanks!

Was also going to say to Kylie-Griff that you shouldn't get too worried if you notice on these boards that it hasn't worked for a lot of people and they're talking about going in and out of hospital - these forums include all sorts from mild to severe but they do tend to attract the people who are uncontrolled/severe or having blips in their control, plus of course newly diagnosed people like you who just want some advice. Just didn't want you to think though that everyone has experiences like some of the ones described on here, as there are plenty of people out there who find that once they have the right medication their asthma is very well controlled and doesn't interfere with daily life.

Thank you.

I think mine asthma is only mild, not as severe as others on these boards. I have only had one moderate attack last new year, walked straight into the swimming baths and the chlorine smell hit me and i couldn't breathe was horrible.

Since taking the brown preventer my chest feels more free if u understand me

Thanks for the advice everyone :)

Hello and welcome too,

There are people here with all levels of asthma from mild through to very severe (often known as brittle) on a lot of medication and in/out of hospital (often referred to as Costa) which is relatively rare given millions of people with asthma. Thus you will generally be always able to find someone who has had similar experiences or able to answer questions.

Have a look at the info available under 'all about asthma' along the top in particular medicines & treatments asthma.org.uk/all_about_ast... You can order leaflets including an action plan under publications there too.

As others have said too, it can take time to find the best combination for you, the aim is to minimise symptoms so asthma is well controlled.

It may be worth getting a space to help with taking inhalers and minimise side-effects. Also, if you do not already have one, a prepayment prescription certificate (PPC) would help, see here for more info nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1127.aspx

I already have a spacer and the mask which came with it, as when taking the inhaler without it i would have a coughing fit so this has helped greatly.

Thank you for the free prescriptions website, but i already get mine for free as i live in Wales.

Yeah this brown preventer has helped a lot i just have a few symptoms now, still get breathless when i haven't done anything and feel like i can't get enough air into my lungs, so hopefully the purple preventer will help even more.

My peak expiratory flow before was 250 after one month of being on the brown preventer its not at 380 so looking better already :)

If you have had issues around chlorine in swimming pools be careful with chlorine based cleaning products as these may cause you issues as well....
