pain on deep breath

I have pain in my chest (one side) when I breathe in/cough/yawn, it bearable but I wondered if I should go to GP about it or wait to see if it gets worse first? I haven't taken any painkillers or anything because like I say its bearable and i am just avoiding deep breaths/coughing/yawning etc.

Hi,

Does it feel like it's your ribs? Sounds a bit like what I had/have which is costochondritis ie inflammation of rib cartilage - I've had this on both sides and all round from coughing etc and GP said it was basically an overuse injury brought on by breathing etc being so much effort - tends to be worse with coughing, deep breaths etc. She advised ibuprofen though realise you may not be able to take that as can be dodgy with asthma, but it stops the inflammation as well as the pain. Mine still flares up every now and again if breathing has been especially troublesome but is not as bad as it was a few weeks ago.

However, obviously can't give medical advice/diagnose on here even if I were remotely qualified and chest pain could be something else so maybe worth seeing GP anyway even if they just tell you the same thing as mine? At least they could advise you on how to stop it getting worse!

I've had a pain similiar to what you've described. Mine was put down to muscular pain, like you I didn't take painkillers as it was a bearable pain. My respiratory nurse advised me to hold the painful area when needing to cough/yawn, using a hot water bottle to relieve the pain, and if the pain gets too bad, to make sure to take painkillers as not breathing properly through pain isn't ideal.

Hope you feel better soon!
