Is there ayone {Must be} who has 2 follow this Diet.....what happens if you start 2 have ""Allergic reaction""""2 allowed foods....Please info me Cass.xx

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you but I haven't been able to get intno the site for ages.

I’m so sorry to hear you have been put on the low salicylate diet. It is a real pain and it takes all your ingenuity to achieve a reasonably varied diet. However, although life is miserable when you first start it you do eventually get used to it and appreciate how much better life is than all those awful symptoms and emergency admissions

How are you coping with it? I find taking daily anti histamine allows me to have the occasional ‘naughty’ treat

In the beginning, what I dreaded most was having to explain to people that there were so many foods I couldn’t eat – I’m sure they all thought I was neurotic!! But eventually they got used to me.

As to how to act in during a reaction, I take an antihistamine every day. As soon as I feel something happening I have a really long drink of water and take another antihistamine. If it gets really serious ie if my throat swells so much I can't even swallow water or if I'm gasping for breath I use an epipen and ring the ambulance straight away. I think the secret is to be always alert, let everyone know exactly where your epipen is and never be tempted to move it to a different location - carry one with you whereever you go.

I get minor reations at least once a week but haven't had a medical emergency for a long time.

Just be calm and diligent and once you get used to the diet you probably won't have too many reactions

I have been meaning to reply to this thread for a while. I too am on a low salicylate diet, I started it in June and it has taken me a long time to get used to it although I have noticed a massive difference in my asthma control and my chronic urticaria.

In answer to your question to having reactions to allowed foods... it can be trial and error to find how much you can tollerate of different foods especially those on the 'low' salicylate list, also I have found that different sources of information list foods differently in terms of their salicylate content. For example when I was first diagnosed I was given very out of date information (dated 1988 no joke!) by a dermatologist at York Hospital, but with help from my immunology consultant in Leeds and a Dietician from York I have up to date information provided by Allergy UK and the Dietician dept at York Hosp.

I found things which were listed as 'low' on the 1988 version were listed as 'high' on the 2008 info from Allergy UK. I called Allergy UK on their advice line and spoke to a very sympathetic lady who understood what I had been going through with months of emergency admissions, constant itchy skin and unpredictable asthma, she sent me some info sheets which have been very useful in helping me to plan meals. The website salicylatesensitivity.com is also very helpful with meal ideas and recipies.

What sort of 'allowed' foods have you been reacting to? If you are sure that they are low or have no salicylates in them then I would go back to your doctor or consultant and let them know what is happening. It is possible to develop new allergies at any stage in life.

Hope this helps a little bit, I feel relieved to hear of other people on this awful diet!
