They use to be graded 1 to 9 and Unclassified.

1 to 6 were passes but you needed 5 passes at a minimum of grade 3 to go on for A levels.

In Scotland we used to have O Levels and Highers either pass or fail Now they have Standards with grades from 1 to 5 I think and Highers and Advanced Highers with grades A to D

O-levels it was for me too. All except for one was University of London and they used A to E and O for passes and F, G & H for fail. I believed in variety so tried for one of each of all the grades, but did not manage an A in anything.

Ended up with passes in:-

Technical Drawing

Science (Building & Engineering).

Gift of the gab was how we got through to take A-levels. After nearly being demoted from the ""Lower 6th"" back into the ""Upper 5th"", I managed to blag my way into Physics A-level without even having an O-level pass (please note that Physics is still not on the above list). Got A-level Technical Drawing, though.

My last summer also saw the end of Grammar schools, including mine. I don't know if it was the AJ-Effect, but they swapped to Comprehensive schools in Middlesex as soon as they got rid of me. This also saw the introduction of CSEs to run parallel to GCEs - before GCSEs replaced both.
