I had hypnotherapy to help me with anxiety about fifteen years ago. I saw an advert in the local paper and met a lovely local lady who saw me for about six sessions in her home. Very expensive, but I had a good job at the time and would have done anything to get myself better rather than resort to the medication my GP had suggested. It was wonderful at first, she was very sympathetic to my condition, explained the physical manifestations of anxiety etc. and made me feel extremely relaxed and calm in the session. After a couple of sessions I resented the fact that she sat back and did nothing while playing a tape of her usual 'mantra', she didn't seem interested in my progress. I didn't go back.

Hi, I have had various stop smoking hypnotherapy sessions over the years with variable results. All lovely and relaxing.

I also had a series of hypnotherapy sessions for anxiety through Anxiety UK, again brilliantly relaxing but he said I did well because I used his cd every day at home too. Then I the sessions stopped, I was too busy for the cd and anxiety crept back!

Hypnotherapy is really a form of guided relaxation. Oh I just remembered I have recently been using a stop smoking hypnotherapy app from iTunes which is excellent. I am making enquiries about hypnotherapy for a phobia at the moment but don't know when to tackle that. Good luck if you decide to do it but steer clear of charlatans like agora experienced. There is an easily accessible online register of hypno therapists.

Hi, how strange you should post this today! I had my first hypnotherapy session this morning. I don't think it's for me, though. I wasn't a willing subject really. One more thing I was afraid of. Ended up just doing a sort of releasing of emotions. I got a bit upset and felt pretty dizzy afterwards, but then i feel dizzy and off-balance every day. I had gone along for cranio-osteopathy at a clinic in town and therapist suggested hypnotherapy before proceeding further with physical treatment. I just panicked, basically. I'm sure many people have a positive result. I think I have issues with letting go. On the otherhand, I use a Stillness Meditation most days for relaxation and sleep which is very helpful.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience of hypnotherapy, I am a qualified hypnotherapist and was not taught to use tapes or scripts, the type of sessions I offer are specific to the client and their specific needs, each session is bespoke for that particular client. If you are looking for a therapist in the future and do not have a recommendation from someone you know there are a few things you can do to ensure you are working with the right therapist... Check they are registered, there are various governing bodies, they regulate the course NOT the therapist, check their testimonials and call them for an initial chat, ask them how they work and how they can help you, get a feel for the therapist and be sure you are comfortable with them and that you feel they are focused on your needs and the right person for you to be working with, you need to feel confident that they can help you and that you feel safe and supported in opening up and discussing your issues. If you don't feel comfortable do not feel obliged to book a session, you will not benefit from it!! Sometime there can be underlying issues going on which you may not be aware of on a conscious level. An experienced therapist who has their integrity in tact will work with you to uncover the underlying issues you may have and assist you though the transition process in a caring and supportive manner, anything less than that will not be conducive to your receiving the benefits you are looking for. If you have any questions feel free to ask me... I hope this information helpful.
