Anxiety Brain Fog

Hi All,

I wanted to reach out and ask if any one has or does suffer from bad brain fog from anxiety. I have had GAD most of my life but up until recently I only had a few bouts of the brain fog. Now I am suffering from it almost daily. It's almost more like a brain wall rather than fog. It's like my brain almost slows down to a halt and I cannot think very fast and my working memory is almost nil. I have seen neuros and had MRIs done and they all say it's not dementia etc. It almost feels like the anxiety has attacked the frontal cortex rather than just being a limbic thing.

I would love to talk with anyone who experiences this or the like?

Any support would also be greatly appreciated!

Dave

hi have you ever noticed if the allergy percentage was high on the days that you have the brain fog because that’s what happens to me I have it all the time also and I have noticed that especially when the allergies are high I get this and they say because the antihistamines are trying to fight off the allergens in your body, Diane

Thanks for the reply Sophia. It’s a similar feeling and I have felt it. This one seems very anxiety related though.

I’ve for sure experienced this, seems to be a newer symptom of anxiety that I’ve noticed as I’ve gotten older.

Treating the anxiety has helped a ton, also working on my general physical health.

Hi! I am pretty sure it’s anxiety that causes this as it can hang around and then all of a sudden a different energy path will go through my brain and it will go away. I have seen it recede before but man it’s so hard when you are in it. What do you do when in throws of this brain wall. How long does it last for you?

Dr. Claire Weekes speaks of this, Brain Fog, and other body fatigues -- Emotional Fatigue, Muscle Fatigue, Mind Fatigue, and Fatigue of the Spirit. It's in her book, More Help for your Nerves, but may be under another title.

Mental Fatigue, I think that is what Dr. Weekes calls it! All part of the Anxiety & Fear!

hello to you, i have `suffered` from G A D for many years, it`s been concurrent with Crohn's

disease . The Crohn's has been in remission for about 25 years following treatment ,

coincidently after i retired. Stress being the main factor while working!

The Anxiety etc i feel built up during the Covid issue, i had it for short period but suffered

mentally and the anxiety really became severe. i consulted on a variety of treatments.

The medication i have been using seems to help most , Duloxetine is my main help i have used it for 18 months with good results. The downside is the after effects it produces.

Dizziness, and the brain fog being the main issues, i am now on 20 mgs at night .

These issues occur in the morning ,lasting till lunch time.

I am male .84 years of age, keep active ,

Hi !, Yes sir, I have been through the 'Brain Fog' as well, right about when my anxiety symptoms started (2019). I am a College student

{MY VERY FIRST POST ON THE GROUP YAY !}

What i have experienced is that..

1.My mind doesn't feel as sharp as it was:

Memory as well, I didn't have much trouble in high school with academics, but from the last year of high school and past few years of collage, it been hard, i feel disoriented and struglleing to grasp concepts

2.Minds keeps zoning in and out:

In classes, when someone speaks to me, or even in day to day life, I go in to the room to get something and I just forget what it was?-the reason I had some other thoughts running in my mind. Now when I try to recall, not only I lost track of what I was in the room for, but also what i was thinking off, meanwhile smth else pops into my mind

3.Brain feel heavy-headed and light-headed at the same time..

What has helped me?

--I go do something that requires your up most attention

>> I cook a snack for me, again smth that you have to keep your eye on, not smth like trun up the gas and let it cook.

>> Play with my microscope or knit something

i just focus on something small, knit something with loads of details

>> Drive ma cycle on a busy/complex road

Just like what SOPHIA24 talked about, she absolutely nailed the point.

With anxiety, you become more sensitive to your senses. What i feel in my case, this leads to me

-Being startled way more easily.

-Getting distracted to some itch etc.. Although my eyes are on the book and i am reading it out loud i busy trying to get rid of the itchy and none of the words stick to me

So, things like cycling and practising mindfulness while doing that, like feeling the air whooshing past by, sound of the tires, and the bumps on the road. These helped me ^override^ the other feeling, whether anxious or smth else.

Hi! Great first post! That is exactly what’s happening to me. The problem I have is that I made the unfortunate mistake of consulting Dr Google who should probably lose their medical license but those thing I have experienced in a matter of a few clicks end up as having Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The other unfortunate things is my brain can’t seem to unsee what it has seen. Like with any news nowadays no matter which side you are on, my brain deals in sound bites with anxiety and it will collect “sound bites” and make this case that I have to have a neurogenitive disorder even though expert opinions don’t support that. Would like to hear more about your experiences.

Also..Sir, I feel that the Doctors who came to the conclusion that it's Dementia, probably a confirmation bias, because of your Age. True, it's better to be safe then sorry, but again what if it's just the anxiety?.

You could maybe trying out things that everyone has shared and maybe also see what help you with the anxiety and check your Working speed and memory, when your anxious/brain fogged and when your not!

That's how I came to the conclusion and was able to actully challenge my therapist who initially thought I had a learning disability. Haha

Here's what i did,

>> I took a number of maths sums and increased difficulty every next question,

>> Then i tested my accuracy, On a time limit and without a timelimit (but i couldn't see the time myself) [Not only did this disorient me (the Fogg) but i was also anxious about the time]

>> There was a massive difference !! I could only do 6th grade level sumswith the Timelimit and without i competed even next semester level questions.

--

In your case if you got dementia or any other condition like that you would perform bad anyhow right? (i guess as you aren't a student you could maybe keep the test non academic, maybe like memorising the order of fruits?) or difference wouldn't be that much.

---

I firmly believe that a normal student with out the bigworry (i like calling anxiety that lol, makes it looks smoller) wouldn't worry about the time as much as one with the bigworry would, and without the Fog they can also keep track of the time in thier head, which is also something that i struggle to do recently

=> These symptoms are extermyl closer to dementia, and also they can be effected by your sleep

I wasn't sure what you mean't by this line:

=> These symptoms are extermyl closer to dementia, and also they can be effected by your sleep

Well no I am not a student but I can definitely see my work performance as well as ease of work vary wether I am very anxious or not. I do perform much better and can do more complex troubleshooting easier than if I am anxious. What happens when I become anxious and the brain wall emerges is that it feels like thinking through thick mud. Usually I am able to push through the mud and get done what is needed but it takes an extreme effort. I am always surprised afterwards that I was still able to troubleshoot an issue or fix a problem even with the large amount of anxiety and brain muck. That being said, I am guessing if I had some neurological disorder the above wouldn't be the case.

Like I said the only person who thinks I have dementia or Alz is me, everyone around me says no.

I will write more in a bit but no professional has said it dementia, in fact they have all said it’s not Alzheimer’s or dementia.
