I experienced it when I had my first panic attack although I had no idea what it was or what was going on for me so I continued repressing and denying my emotions/anxious thoughts. What started to help me was initially using medication, in my case it was klonopin and starting therapy and educating myself about anxiety/panic attacks, etc... The thing I learned was that anxiety/panic is a paradox and the more you resist it the more it persists and I had been taught to fight it and outthink it which didn't work. I found the DARE Anxiety book, youtube and their phone app to be very helpful for me. Other good resources are the books and youtube of Claire Weekes, the youtube of Emma at therapy in a Nutshell and the youtube/website of Paige Pradko.
Kimbad1990, I too experienced the symptoms of depersonalization and derealization
when I first started experiencing panic attacks. As designguy stated, I too did not know
what it was or what was going on.
I would look in the mirror and not recognize who was looking back. Very frightening
experience to say the least. My head was so cluttered with thoughts that I couldn't
think straight or see straight. It wasn't until years later that I learned that the reason
behind this was over stimulation of our subconscious mind. There was no room for
any new info and so we go into a state of not knowing who we are or where we are going.
I can tell you as you go forward towards your goal of healing, it does disappear.
Try not to fight it or fear it since fear only begets more fear. It's going to be okay xx
