Timeless,
I have had anxiety and depression for years, and diagnosed PTSD for some time now. Phantosmia is a real symptom of all of these. Much like how music can take us back to a time in our lives (good or bad), and the way food smells can harken us back to more happy times, some smells can trigger us.
For me, the smell of gunpowder, lead, and graphite (in pencils) trigger me. It takes me back to the night that someone tried to murder me. It makes me afraid, and makes me paranoid about the smells. But, I have to consciously tell myself that it is not a threat, just because I am smelling them. Often times, I imagine the smell is there, but this is only in times of high stress.
Those of us with anxiety and depression are just "rewired" differently.
Hi
Thanks for your reply.
It gives me relief that anxiety has caused the chemical smells lm experiencing. Ive had anxiety for quite a few years but never had this before. It started when l was going through a court case to get access to my grandaughters. I guess the stress must have triggered something.
Regards Pauline
I would check with a Dr first !!To assume your symptom is exactly like someone else’smay not be wise .. it may very well be anxiety but should be checked out :).
