drop in heart rate?

Today I had the worst episode of this- all of a sudden I felt light headed and my chest felt heavy, I checked my Fitbit and my heart rate was 50bpm (usually 60-70) I also had and still have an ache down from my left shoulder.

Usually when this happens it passes after a few minutes, however today it was much worse. I called 111 who sent an ambulance (although by this time I felt a bit better) The paramedics did blood pressure, ecg and blood sugar- all was ok other than my blood sugar was 4.6 which was apparently a little on the low side.

They said I should go a&e to have a blood test, which can detect if the episode was something to do with my heart - however I declined. My heart rate has risen since and although I’m still not feeling great- I don’t feel as bad.

I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced sudden and intermittent episodes like this?

I am 35, not overweight or currently on any medication.

Hi Knic, of course it is always your choice to decline going to the A&E.However, as a former Paramedic, may I ask how much water you have

had today? Being dehydrated can and will cause your heart rate to drop

at times causing that lightheaded feeling as well.

Drinking enough water throughout the day will make you feel better by

providing more blood volume to circulate throughout your body.

It's just a thought. Of course, if this continues or you get worse, please follow

the Paramedic's advice and follow up with a blood test. My best to you :) xx

Thank so much for replying. I didn’t actually start drinking water until the episode started, I had only had a cup of tea and a yoghurt up until 12pm.

The paramedics actually mentioned about water, and also got me to eat 2 slices of jam on toast to try raise my blood sugar.

They mentioned about the blood test needing to be done within hours of the episode, to check enzymes to do with a heart attack I think- this scared me slightly but they also said there was no guarantee a&e would do blood tests and may only do another ecg xxx

Hi Knic, it might be a good idea to follow up with your doctor at least.He/She will run the tests necessary. Since we aren't doctors, our purpose

here is to keep you safe. Keep us updated. :) xx

Hello :-)

I do not wish to frighten you and the chances are this is nothing but having had 3 heart attacks and waiting for Bypass Surgery now even though I admit I am older than you I would take the paramedics advice and let the Hospital do those blood tests if that was their advice even if you are feeling a lot better now , it is better to be safe than sorry and find the real cause why this occurred

Like I said could be nothing at all but get it checked out :-) x

I agree will the others that you should get checked out further. You called for help you should follow their advice... just my opinion.

35 year olds can have heart problems. Don't use the young age as reason to ignore any symptoms.

I'm not a Dr but I do work in the medical field. It's not my place here to make any assumptions on anything. Just stating a few facts.

The special blood tests needed to be done within 12 hours, so that time frame has passed. However I have spoken to a Dr and I’m being reffered to a cardiologist- although the wait could be weeks-months maybe I’ll get some answers.

I have had a 5 day heart monitor a few years ago, which didn’t detect anything- this was after a bad episode similar to this.
