Suffering from anxiety and can't seem to get my breath which leads me to panic especially at night. I can't breathe through my nose so find it difficult to do breathing exercises to calm me. Anyone similar or have any helpful ideas?

Yup! I’ve had this and it went on for about 4-5 months.

Kidneyenq, because of the severe anxiety you are under right now because of your brother's illness, it is quite difficult to breathe properly but it can be done.

You can still do the breathing exercises by breathing in through your mouth and exhaling through your mouth slow and long exhales. It would be best that you follow a breathing meditation that will keep you in sync. Breathing from our mouth can cause excessive dryness.

You want to avoid hyperventilating as well as holding your breath during stressful times.

Watch your posture when sitting or standing which will allow for the diaphragm to be open.

In bed, if you place your arms above your head, it will allow you to take in a breath easier.

Don't fear this natural body function. When you go to sleep, our bodies know how to take

over to keep us safe. :) xx

This is the same recommendation I would give as well. When I used to get this alot I found it helpful to start the breathing exercise with a good deep exhale to deflate my hyperinflated lungs. When your lungs are hyperinflated it feels like you can't get enough air because you're not exhaling enough before you take the next breath in...so if you feel this might be the case for you, try starting with the exhale first 🙂

That does sound pretty much what I have. I am very grateful for your advice and that of others here.
