Anxiety when in a car

Hi I am becoming more afraid of been in a car I don't drive so I guess that makes it worst but I hate it when whoever I am with over takes or drives fast I have to tell them to slow down I really thought I was going to die the other day whilst getting a lift I had no choice as it was a important therapy meeting she was driving very close to a chemical lorry which added to the stress then she overtook it and didn't slow down for ages I didn't dare say anything as it was a favour and I didn't know her very well I don't like buses either I ride a bike but stay on the pave ment

Hi Curly1, have you been in a car accident before? I only ask because my Friend will not get in a car, bus, train or plane. All due to losing her parents in a Car crash as a baby. She has never got over it Properly, I am the Opposite I can sit in a Car(not a bus or train though) I am told I have agoraphobia but I think it could be people that cause my attacks? I panic as soon as I go outside, I am doing a lot better if no one is around yet as soon as I see more than one person its panic mode, I can even drive my car again yet Never have panic attacks when in my car!. I have spoken to my friend who does not travel in vehicles and She told me that She will be trying Hypnotherapy over the next few weeks as apparently there has been a lot of success regarding phobias and anxieties ! Perhaps its worth a try? I just might try it myself as I'm so sick of my panic attacks.

Good Luck and all the best Derek.

Let me know what you decide and if you find anything that helps you. If you can.

Hi Derek thank you for reply, no I havent been in a crash I don't mind so much if I'm with a trusted driver and going relatively slow, I was on a bus once and his tire got flat, bus came to a halt but that was a couple years ago I'm 56 I used to feel safe with my mam she had a driving job I would go to work with her enjoying country scenic trips, I never felt safe with anyone else she always kept her distance from the car in front, I never went on roundabouts when younger I was terrified of them too, I have a massive fear of heights and crowds bring me out in a sweat and I start to feel light headed one good thing about the virus the shopping trips were quite not many in supermarkets, I have always got by I have my bike and my family and friends are within walking distance I don't thinks it's safe on the road too many nut cases that like speed and have no sense of danger, I am starting a new job as casual passenger assistant helping the children on small school buses but my friend does it and the drivers of course are very skilled and have to have childrens safety priority so I'm not worried about that and I'll be watching the children so I'll forget myself, I'm more worried about the virus it's neat gone in hull though apart from some sfish hl city player that decided to play after testing positive, hence spreading it so not sure how that will pan out ,I am sorry for your friends trauma, I hope your friend has managed to cope in life somehow, I feel we all have a inner strength that keeps us going we just have to have faith in that and know we are stronger than we think I wish you well and hope you overcome your problems I find breathing techniques very helpful there's one in particular when a panic comes breath in to count of 4 hold for 7 then big puff breath out let all your anxiety out and repeat until you are calm take care x
