Negative thoughts
Yes. So true. Its like we have to try so hard to think positive but its so easy to stay in the negative loop and it is constant. But to think positive is a fight. It gets over shadowed by the negative. And before you know it you've basically given in to the negative. I understand you. I wish us well...
We live in a negative society. That makes it doubly hard to be positive, especially when prone to be negative. However, thought patterns can be changed. It just takes practice, more practice, perseverance, and self-watching. Basically, whenever you recognize a negative thought creeping in, quickly drive it out, by thinking of something more positive. If you are like many who are negative, you may need to write down a list of positive thoughts. Keep it with you, and bring it out when needed to read. Read until negative thoughts are gone. You may need to update your list periodically. Also practice being positive by looking at something, anything, and tell your self the good things about it, her, or him. Over time, you will find yourself needing to rely less on your list. You will find yourself automatically finding good things about others, and things. Also try to avoid movies that have negativity. There are plenty of them. Find the good comedies, not the ones that use put-downs as humor. While you are working on changing your thought patterns, try to avoid as many people who are negative, as possible. As your own thinking changes, you will recognize more people who are negative.
If you stick to this routine, you will find that intrusive negative thoughts will come less and less often.
Best of luck to you. Let us know how things work, okay?
Hey refusetolose,
Anxiety has a way of acting independently within us. That is how we are built. But anxiety can be calmed down and the thoughts calm right down with it. When I am anxious I have negative and also some strange and frightening thoughts as well. I've found that by letting the negative thoughts come, and regarding them for what they are (products of my anxiety center) they settle down and the rest of my mind (positive, calm, confident) takes over again. I have practiced this for a long time!
I've found that pushing a thought away does not work for me at all. In fact, it just magnifies the thought! This gets to the nature of anxiety. Anxiety is your fight/flight/freeze center in the mind. If anxiety so much as perceives a fight (trying to push a thought away, or any resistance to it at all), it wakes it up even more - "what, there's a fight somewhere? Don't worry I got this- here's some more adrenaline! Don't worry, I'm awake! I'll stay wide awake now- you need me for this fight!". Meanwhile, anxiety created the thought in the first place. Pretty ironic, huh?
Practice seeing these thoughts for what they are! Anxiety produced. The rest of your mind is gigantic- and calm, and logical and reasonable. Practice exercising the correct reaction to anxiety and all it brings (like the negative thoughts) for what it is. It's just your anxiety doing the talking. Laugh at it if you can.
" To cure, we must accept and not fight. While accepting, try to be unafraid of it. Try to see it for what it is, no more than a tired mind in a tired body that is sensitized by fear, especially fear of the obsession (or thought)" ~ Dr. Claire Weekes
