Fearing sounds.

TrippyMcGuire762 profile image

Can anxiety make you fear sounds? Can it make you think sounds are something worse or more than what they are? I'm scared something more is going on, and I'm losing it, and going crazy. I'm freaked out right now. I'm on 50mg of sertraline if that has something to do with it.

Hi TrippyMcGuire762, reading over your posts since you started Sertraline looks like every time your med is increased so are your symptoms. (which is normal) but it's the fear of sounds and hearing things that needs to be addressed by your doctor. It may very well be coming from your medication. xx

Its been increased for almost two weeks. I would think it would start before then. Dunno though. Talk with the doc on friday and start CBT therapy tomorrow. We'll see if it helps.

Good Luck with CBT, it's a great form of therapy. Great idea to talk with your doctor on Friday. Eventually, everything works out. xx

As bad as it sounds to say, its kinda good to know that is the case. I started fearing I was having schizophrenia saturday, which is probably fueling the fears. Although I talk with my doc on Friday and will bring it up.

It's ok. It always a makes a person feel better that they are not the only person in a difficult situation. I have anxiety every single day almost all day. And I've been trying to help myself through diet. But I know I still need more help because it's much more than anxiety I'm dealing with. Sometimes I can't move when it attacks me. I feel so numb inside when it happens. I often feel very socially awkward of people I haven't seen in along time. I don't know if that has anything to do with anxiety. I would really like to know though because it's killing me inside.

Not really an issue for me. I can normally deal with people just fine. I get hardcore fear bolts sometimes though.

TrippyMcGuire read some of my post. I also was scared of sounds because out of no where everything started sounding so strange. I also started thinking I had schizophrenia but I didn't. Whatever you do stay off google because if not your symptoms and that fear will Increase and it'll be extremely hard to control. I was there a few weeks ago and now I'm almost free from that fear! Good luck to ya.

Well, I made that mistake about googling it already, that's how I got where I am now.

in reply to TrippyMcGuire762

I understand because that was my mistake too. Know one thing that took me a while to finally realize that I wasn't loosing it.

People that are schizo/ psychotic aren't aware of their symptoms. So no, your not going schizo.

Any idea on how long it will take before it dissapates? Its really quite bothersome.

in reply to TrippyMcGuire762

That'll be up to you. It took me 5 months to get over it because I kept on googling it and I didn't change my thoughts.

Once you accept it as thoughts than it becomes easier. Accept your fear as fear and be okay with it. Remind your self that you're not in Danger and get busy to change your thoughts.

Mpa5524, What about the sound and vibration of fireworks. The dog and I hide in the house on July 4th in the U.S. :)

Yessss and they have the fire works down street from me because I live near the water lol. And few houses down from me is a retirement home and their air or heating system they have outside when it kicks on and my window is open I can hear it and that vibration goes right through me. I've always had great hearing but now feel like bionic woman with what I can hear lol

Me too Mpa, So incredibly aware of sounds as well as smells. I can smell smoke from a chimney or fire pit in the house and it gets me going. As well as the people next door who have a generator that kicks on and runs for 15 minutes. It's seems like hours and like I can't relax unless it is completely quiet. I think I would do well retreating to a monk's home where "silence is a virtue"... :) Oh well, that's my vent for tonite xx Thanks for sharing

Yeah, I've had it go right through me before as well. But my main thing that scared me was that my brain would assign words to it, just like single words. Not speaking to me or anything, but just random words.

My name, my dogs name, puppy. I let my doc know when I saw them, as well as the specialist and they think it might just be anxiety and my brain going a million miles an hour.

TrippyMcGuire762 profile image

I should clarify, it is my brain assigning the sounds words, but things like whispers on tv, sounds I can't idenify that are faint (from just random stuff going on inside the house), or like people's breathing are things I pick up on way too well, its the unidentifiable sounds that my brain is trying to assign something to from how its been. As I'm someone who even before anxiety paid attention to every sound around me. As it was something necessary for my work.

That's a very interesting concept in how aware your brain has become to whispers as well as faint sounds. I have at times heard as well as felt someone's breathing other than my own in bed. It's like the 5 senses coming from our brain have been heightened in some way due to anxiety. I'm going to have to do some research on that. Hang in there TrippyMcGuire.. there's got to be an answer. If I find it, I will let you know. :)

We'll see, I go back in for more CBT Wednesday, and have a Dr. visit after that. But yeah, I'm holding on for now.
