hi,

does anyone deal with emotional dysregulation? i've been going to therapy for 12 years now, but i experience overwhelming emotions on a pretty much daily basis, and am generally unable to self soothe.

I do! Im seeing a therapist plus experimenting with meds. Haven't found the magic combo yet but your not alone.

I really appreciate you sharing. I’ve tried a few SSRI’s and haven’t found the right one yet either. Hoping you and I can find the right one soon.

hm that’s difficult. i’ve never been able to get past the side effect period because they’ve been too difficult to deal with.

yes, I can relate. It feels like an ongoing chore for me. Maybe that is just living? I sometimes tire over the ongoing self care and wonder if I just feel too much.

yeah, it doesn’t feel like most people experience life/emotions the same way

One of the effective ways of treating emotional dysregulation is dialectical behavioral therapy, or DBT.

It is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy in which patients are taught skills and strategies for managing emotions, handling conflict, and building tolerance for uncomfortable feelings.

Try this, so it can minimize the problem

I found emdr therapy very helpful especially when I started working with a therapist that specialized in treating trauma/c-ptsd. Also learning and practicing basic mindfulness to be able to sit with the thoughts and emotions without attaching and reacting to them has been very helpful. It takes time but works. I also listen/watch calming relaxation asmr videos on youtube, it's kind of like getting a soothing calming massage. Most of us were never taught how to soothe ourselves so it's a skill we need to develop and realize that it's really up to us to be able to do it for ourselves as part of our self-care and self-love.

Yeah, I’ve also found emdr therapy very helpful. I’m currently looking for another emdr therapist, since I moved states. I love asmr videos too. Yeah, I’ve certainly been realizing more that I really need to not rely on others for soothing, and that I need to develop those skills.

I am currently trying therapy again. I’m in a constant state of……I’m a wreck I have bipolar and anxiety disorders. Meds work well for me but my life has been too overwhelming for me. My adult son is my biggest stressor, but there are too many at once and they keep hitting in waves of one crisis on top of another.

The therapist specializes in ACT therapy. A type of CBT that I’d never heard of before. I’ve just begun, but I’m hopeful. So far it is helping. ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
