I’ve had really bad anxiety for the last two months and have had constant nausea all bloods came back normal but the doctor wants me to have a camera down my throat I’m very nervous anyone had experience of an endoscopy and if throat spray or sedation is best I don’t really want to be sedated but I’m worried about gagging etc any advice greatly appreciate x
Endoscopy : I’ve had really bad anxiety... - Anxiety and Depre...
Endoscopy
I would not have this done just for nausea alone. Is there other issues with your stomach? It’s probably just the anxiety, this happens to me a lot and I did the Endoscopy and everything was fine. If you choose to do it, they will lighty sedate you so you so won’t feel gagging. Ginger works great for my stomach and nausea.
Thankyou for your response I’ve had no stomach issues just the nausea they’ve prescribed anti nausea medicine but it doesn’t seem to work so they said about the endoscopy it’s booked for next week I’m dreading it x
No dread its quick, I didn’t even know it was done. I just came out of it like in a dream state. Maybe sore throat after or just hoarse I can’t remember. Ice Cream yummy! 😀
Bless you thankyou for your reply we’re you sedated or just throat spray x
I have had two-one with throat spray (they asked me what flavor I wanted) and one with sedation. They were both fine, very brief, no pain at all. You do not need to worry. It is one of the easiest tests to have.
Hey,
I used to be so caught up with anxiety myself that I convinced I had something wrong with my stomach, I did as it turned out, I had anxiety !
I have had a camera inserted in both ends because of it, I think I was sedated for both but I think the camera is so fine now that, that isn't required unless you want to be I guess. It depends which ever you're comfortable with, either way be easy on yourself and don't worry and end up making your situation and symptoms worse.
All the best. ....
I have had 5. Believe me you want to sleep. It takes about 15 minutes. That is all. For me the worst part is when you are getting sedated, they put this thing that looks like a canning jar lid ( but it is rubber) on your open mouth. It hooks behind your head and it allows access to the doctor to see down your throat and the scope lets them see all the way to the end of your stomach to the opening to your sm. intestine.
I had to have my throat " stretched" 5 different times in 2 years. I kept getting choked and food stuck in my throat.
The process was not bad at all. And the worst part is the " stretching" gave me a sore throat the day after.
I would have an upper endoscopy any day of the week.
The dentist can be 10 times worse!
You got this. Together we ARE mighty!
😊
I've had it done several really times. First time was miserable. After that I told them I had a bad gagging issue and don't take the scope very well. I have not had a problem since. I always mention my gag reflux to them before having it done. Even dentkdts taking pictures of my back teeth I gag on the card you have to bite on.
I've had several(just had one 2 weeks ago). I have chronic gastritis. As others said you are sedated, wake up and it's like a 20-30 minute nap. Throat may be scratchy and sore after, but not a big deal. There's no prep involved except the usual nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before. Hope all goes well!!
Before i was diagnosed with anxiety and major depression, my dr. Wanted to rule out anything else by tests. I too had constant nausea and i'm also emetephobic (fear of vomiting), which made things worse.
I had the endo and nothing was found. It was an easy procedure. I wasn't worried about it because i just wanted to know what was wrong with me, but all in all, it was this dang anxiety gnawing me.
Best thoughts and wishes for you.
If it’s the test done by the ear nose throat dr , it’s just a tiny flexible wire up the nose and down the throat. They use numbing spray . If it’s the test done by the gastroenterologist, you will want to be fully sedated. It’s a quick test and they can look all the way down to the tummy.
I had this procedure done a few months ago and I was a nervous wreck! I was mainly worried about the anesthesia. I had a long talk with the anesthesiologist before the procedure and he said that Propofol is actually the safest because he can dial it up or down during the procedure and it doesn't make you feel loopy all day. I initially wanted no sedation because I was so scared, but I finally agreed to the Propofol and I'm so glad I did. It was the easiest thing ever. I slept through the entire 10 or 15 minute procedure and felt 100% fine afterwards. If I need to have another one in the future, I won't worry about it at all because it was so fast and simple. Good luck to you. I'm sure you will do great
Hi Sarah, have had several endoscopic procedures. Take the sedation. First time I did not and it is difficult to swallow a 1/4 inch tube without gagging. It is a relatively quick exam and has an excellent safety record. Good luck!
