My wife is on warfarin since April for Atrial Fibrillation and had 2 inner ear bleeds this summer and now has vertigo. A connection?

Hi edmul1. It is possible that if your wife's INR (that's the measure that her blood's coagulation speed has been slowed by the Warfarin) is a bit high then bleeding from her ear is a first sign. Vertigo can certainly follow from the inner ear being a bit blocked with dried blood. If my INR is too high then bleeds in my ear or nose bleeds has been the first sign sometimes.

The thing to do first is to get her INR checked quickly at the GP or your anticoag. clinic at hospital and adjust her Warfarin dose if it is too high. For Atrial Fibrillation her INR should probably be 2.0 to 3.0. I would then get an appointment at the GP to have her ears examined and possibly syringed to clear any blockage of dried blood and look for any other problem which might cause a bleed.

Doing these things is likely to sort out the vertigo but if not then your GP will explore other causes.

All the best and I hope she is soon well again but do let us know how she gets on won't you.
