Is osteoporosis hereditary

My partner suffers with osteoporosis and she has two daughters. What action should they take?

At the very least they should start taking calcium and vit d(a combined tablet) a few years before their menapause.....do not wait until osreoporosis hits you.Many doctors(GPs) do not prescribe this until it is too late. So much cheaper for the NHS than fixing broken hips.This is my experience. I am not a doctor. By chance I was on a trial to measure my calcium levels around the age of 50 and i was showing some small signs of osteo.I have had calcium vit D since .

I would suggest including Vit K/K2. There was an article in The Times a few days ago about women who eat a good amount of cruciferous veg (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc) had much lower blood vessel disease. That's because they contain high amounts of Vit K and the calcium is going to the bones rather than the arteries. It's also vital for those on warfarin.

Just as important is good weight bearing exercise (e.g. walking, running, weights, etc. rather than swimming and cycling), as that promotes strong bone growth.

T’is not a problem but this is your second post and neither relate to AF (Atrial Fibrillation) which is a heart condition regarding an irregular heartbeat. I only mention this because I wonder if you are aware that this is an AF forum therefore you might get more helpful responses from forums concerned with osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis in women depends on several factors, such as inherited build (worse being small and slight), bone mass density at puberty-which in turn partly depends on childhood nutrition and exposure to sunlight.

So, as someone else suggested, it is best not to wait until the menopause before taking action. Regular weight bearing exercise such as running, exposure to sunlight and regular vit K supplements are all a good idea.

I used to be a women’s health physio, so came across this often, especially in women of Asian decent
