Clinical Trials for Mushrooms

I have been taking mushroom supplements for years based on my own research (with my oncologist's knowledge) and I think it has helped me continue to remain hormone sensitive, though I really can't know.

Study published by International Journal of Cancer:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

There is now a clinical trial underway to begin studying this (white mushrooms only):

One clinical trial is underway for white button mushrooms:

Phase 1:

clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show...

Phase 2:

clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show...

Maybe this will lead to this as an adjunct treatment to traditional ones. We'll see.

me too! 😎✌️

Would you be kind enough to specify just what type of mushroom supplements you take? Thank you.

There is so much information out there on mushrooms and I have personally decided on Turkey Tail and a broad spectrum mushroom supplement (focused on immune system defense). I was buying Host Defense brand supplements but then read on the ConsumerLabs website that they use some generic fungus that is not actually a mushroom to make up part of the "active ingredients".

I have just started taking RealMushhrooms brand supplements, as they have a much better rating on their ingredients and appear to be a reliable company (until some large corporation buys them out). I am taking Turkey Tail and 5 Defenders. I take one set in the morning and one at night.

Just to get ahead of the potential question, all my liver function blood test remain normal.

I do caution everyone considering taking supplements to do your homework on the supplement manufacturers and types of mushrooms and their characteristics. Also talk with your doctor to ensure there are no contraindicators with other meds.

Let me know if you find out any good new info.

I trust in adding a handful fresh mushrooms to my dinner almost daily. Want to add that I also follow a WFPBD without sugar, oil and alcohol.

Mushrooms form the base of my dinner hand in hand with fresh onions und garlic and tomatoes, all fried in a pan (without oil).

Extra Virgin Olive oil is equally benefital asTuckey tail mushrrom so you can fry everything in Extra virgin olive oil. google the compound "Oleocanthal" that's found in extra virgin olive oil

I avoid oil. When you fry with olive oil be careful. Olive oil gets problematic with high temperature.

AS long as they are cooked, they can provide some benefit.

Mushrooms and PCA

I like a 2 egg omelet with olive oil sautéed stem free baby spinach, sliced cherry/grape tomatoes, and baby portabella mushroom slices. In fact I’ve craved it since my 2nd biochemical recurrence battle started.

I’ve remained hormone sensitive which is a good thing. I’ve been taking casodex (bicalutamide) as monotherapy for 2 years now and PSA remains < 0.1.

I had no idea about mushrooms possibly being helpful until I read this thread.

looks like the first study started in 2009 and is completed. Maybe we will get data soon.

Lots of good data to go over, thanks for posting it. It would help to know how many years you have been taking wbm and how long you have had hrmpc.

Mushroom for about three years and have had hormone sensitive metastatic prostate cancer for 6 years.

Turkey Tail provides many benefits...

mskcc.org/cancer-care/integ...

And I consulted with MSKCC's Alternative Medicine Team regarding my supplement use. TT mushroom was ok'd by them and they also educated me on how to properly read labels, etc. Bottom line is you want a product that is actually lab tested with certificates validating "what it contains" with no fancy dancy advertising blurring the garbage many use. Here's what they recommend and I continue to use (ORIVeDA PSP-50 Turkey Tail Mushroom Extract). You know they test it because each bag has the lab results. And each batch has different results...

Good stuff!

I read certifications and use consumerlab.com/ which test many products to determine their content. That is separate from any research on dosage and usefulness of different strains.

consumerlab.com is an invaluable resource for me, highly recommend that site despite it being subscription required.

Interesting post as a lot of us here believe that to remain hormone sensitive is the name of the game. Would you please fill out your profile with info as to Gleason score, PSA level at diagnosis etc.

remaining HS is much easier if you start with a less aggressive cancer.

As an aside, like mrscruffy I also have a "friend" who grows Psilocybin Shrooms from mycelium.

dmt1121 profile image
dmt1121 in reply to Scout4answers

Gleason score was 9 (5+4) and PSA was 7 (suppressed by Avodart), my psa doubling time back in 2017 was less than two months. Had a prostatectomy, docetaxel with lupron, then stopped lupron to be able to get accurate scan (Axumin) and found lesion on left femur and tumor near bladder in pelvic soft tissue. Had SBRT for lesion in 2018 and have been on Abiraterone since the scan results. PSA remains <.01 and testosterone is < 3ng/ml.

The most medicinal properties (polysaccharides) are from boiling the shrooms and the juice is the medicine. It also helps to get an iguana lamp and after cleaning the shrooms you can expose the gills to the uv rays to increase Vit D dramatically. Mushrooms like turkey tail and reishi you can’t eat but you can certainly drink the juice. The WBM Agaricus bisporis water extract is the medicine and the shroom itself is the great tasting food.

in reply to KocoPr

You can also put them gill side up in the sun and skip the lamp. Sunlight dramatically increases Vit D.sbs.com.au/food/article/201...

Also make sure to use low heat when making Reishi or Turkey Tail tea for maximum extraction. "Low and slow"... i.e. cook in a crock pot on low overnight.

KocoPr profile image
KocoPr in reply to

Sun light is always better even for your own vit D. Mother Nature is the best way. I did not know that about the low temperature for reishi and turkey tails. I thought you had to boil hard to break down the chitin to access the polysaccharides and also break the long chain polysaccharides down also. All the books I have for making double extractions or single water extractions have you boiling for hours.

in reply to KocoPr

Interesting…I’ll look into it and ask at the next myco meeting. I’m also going to a well-known mushroom festival this summer where I’ll be able to find out if not before. I also use the low/slow method for chaga after drying/grinding and don’t make tinctures. Can I ask what books you have that say to boil?

KocoPr profile image
KocoPr in reply to

i have boiled chaga for 5 minutes and for much longer. The black outer crust is what is used for fighting cancer, but is bitter to drink. It’s best to make a double extraction with. I do love the vanilla taste of the short 5 minute boil as you can definitely taste the vanillic acid but that is gone for the longer boils. Some people do have allergies to it’s use. My wife gets a minor rash and my friend gets headaches. It definitely increases vit D

I eat a lot of mushrooms. I also drink a root beer drink made with mushrooms powder, turkey tail and reishi, which is delicious.

I see City of Hope is running that trial.

No coincidence then that this article was in this month’s CoH Patient newsletter:

cityofhope.org/research/sup...

I usually take food/supplements as legitimate cures with a grain of salt because most of the posts here about them are based on lab or mice testing, not actual human testing. CoH at least took their white button mushroom research to a small number of actual in human testing.

Interesting what other foods they’re testing…

Raflo profile image
Raflo in reply to Gl448

This trial has just been suggested to me by COH. It's the 3rd recommendation I've received (others were much more aggressive.) I'm just starting my due diligence. My initial cancer was not as severe as yours (8 PSA, 3+4 Gleason), but PSA just started rising again about a year ago.

Gl448 profile image
Gl448 in reply to Raflo

Interesting that they just recommended it to you.

I posted somewhere else here Dr Dorff’s (COH) comments to me about the mushrooms trial. She didn’t suggest it for me, but told me the name of the place that makes supplement for them if I was really interested in pursuing. I was under the impression they weren’t testing it anymore. 🤔

Raflo profile image
Raflo in reply to Gl448

Thank you for reply. I just got this recommendation last week from the same surgeon at COH who performed my prostatectomy in 2017. I'm just starting my research, but the range of recommendations is a bit alarming.

Early in my analysis, but with my most recent PSA going down, and all clear on PET scan, it seems like maybe taking 9-10 months for this trial wouldn't be the worst idea as whatever is in there doesn't seem to be aggressive at this point.

And I meant range of recommendations from the 3 different sources.

I read about this since i started research for my father's prostate cancer. I prepared the below list of supplements based on my research

1.5 tb Extra Virgin olive oil

700 mg Turkey tail mushroom

2 green tea's a day with Graviola leaves

1000 mg curcumin

20mg Lycopene (avoiding raw tomatoes because they are acidic in nature)

500 mg pomegranate extract (equivalent to 8oz of juice)

Berberine (to keep sugar in check)

Red yeast rice (to keep cholesterol in check)

Only Alkaline water (PH 8.5+)

1 green juice, 3 carrots and apple juice a day

No juice or food that's acidic in nature (PH value less than 6)

Apricot kernels (10-12 a day)

As per my research Prostate cells use sugar and cholesterol to grow and multiply. I am trying to keep things as much natural as possible. Instead of Statins, I use Red yeast rice which is natural and starves cancer cells. recent research shows Red yeast rice slows prostate cancer cells growth by 77%.

weilwell.com/blogs/news/red...

I also want to add 75mg dose of Aspirin which helps to stop metastasis but since i found 1-2 tb extra olive oil can do the same I am sticking with Extra Virgin olive oil only.

”Prostate cells use sugar…”

That’s a myth.

They might use glucose at some point, but so does every other cell in your body. Reducing sugar consumption won’t magically start depriving prostate cancer cells before the rest of your glucose consuming body.
