RP and incontinence

Hi guys,

I had a robotic RP a year and a half ago, along with salvage radiation (38 treatments) and currently wrapping up a year of Lupron. I'm mostly continent around the house and close to a bathroom but have the occasional random accident. I've been doing Kegals although not religiously. I'm 67 and maybe 20 lbs overweight but in decent shape, I work in maintenance and am on my feet all day.

My question is: With a focused program of abdominal exercise and Kegals, do your muscles eventually get to the point of muscle tone where you don't even have to think about it? At some point will muscle memory kick in and this becomes a non-issue?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I had my prostatectomy a couple of years ago. Yes, in my experience it does get better over time. I travel a fair amount (pre covid-19) with few issues. I do make sure, however, that I don’t drink too much if I’m going to be in a car a long time. And if I’m on a plane I prefer an aisle seat to get to the bathroom easily, if needed.

I’d say in my case I’ve progressed from planning every bathroom stop and feeling frantic to get to the bathroom to just being aware of my surroundings and going about my business.

Make sure you do your exercises. As you know, it’s easy. And there is truly no replacement if you want to get much better.

Hope this helps. Best of luck on your journey!

Keep doing your Kegels.... buy some depends... How old are you? your location? treatment location(s)? Gleason score? Psa score? Doctor's name)s)? All info is voluntary but it helps us help you and helps us too. Thank you!

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

Hi my husband saw a pelvic floor physiotherapist after his prostate was removed . It was a little awkward Initially but he is 100% now . no pads and he is back running.

During Covid that would be hard to see a physiotherapist but you may not be doing your Kegals correctly or if you are holding the pelvic floor muscles too tight they would be exhausted. Any muscle not working effectively will weaken eventually. With an empty bladder try to see if you can relax fully before engaging those muscles. The awareness will help.

I have occasional leaking when laughing, sneezing, farting etc after RP in 13 and SRT in 14.

Well, it depends. Did the surgeon spare the right nerves? How well did you practice those Kagel's ahead of time (I did poorly)?

I do fairly well except for exercise (including walking) and adult beverages). I always wear a pad.

The surgeon did not spare the nerve bundles and I'm pissed about that as the cancer was contained within the prostate. I did some Kegals ahead of time but surely not enough. I'm hoping with enough core strengthening exercises I can solve the problem, and I'm also hoping that muscle memory is a factor in this, at some point down the road.
