To the point... can someone watch and video you through your i-Pad or i-Phone’s camera. The question took on a new sense of urgency last night so the reasoning for my question will follow shortly!!! Trying to make a short story out of a novel but (whats left of) my mind is just spinning out of control!!!!

I know nothing about tech, and very little about scams ( I got scammed on ebay once, big time) but I can tell you this particular scam has already been in the news. LOTS of men are getting this email. The advice from authorities is to ignore it.
And if the scammers were to follow up on the threat of sending pics to other people , then 1) that would also be in the news and 2) they'd be working 24/7, given the number of visitors to these sites. That would be work that had no benefit, since their demands were unmet, so it seems unlikely they would waste the time.
If you were watching porn on your laptop the site could have downloaded malicious software on yor computer and may me able to turn your microphone and camera on at any time. Place some electrical tape over your camera and download malwarebytes to fully scan and remove malicious software. Sometimes you may need to restore your computer to to a previous version to get rid of the software. Once you have all of the bad software removed install an anti-virus program that does real-time scanning. Also don't run your computer as an administrator. Creare a User account with no software installation permissions you will then be prompted every time a program tries to install.
Reading it put that way makes me sound more perverted than my intended use! I’m as into porn as I am into touching myself.... not at all! Reluctantly following advice to correct something of which I know very little about!!! I could very well be the biggest chump in the world doing so but.... seams to be working! A byproduct of this post would be someone commenting on the credibility of that advice!!!!!!! Not believing that I could be more humiliated then I am now, I don’t believe I’ll stop it now with so much riding on it.... just eliminate the high tech starter fluid!!

I have recieved emails of this nature three times now. Each time the provided the same old password as proof that they had access to my laptop camera and demanded payment in bitcoins. I knew it was a scam as I hadn't visited any porn sites or engaged in said activity. I looked it up online and was able to confirm the scam.
These types of scammers are the worst of the worst, but you are not in danger.
I am or was a tech guy. I was a network administrator before I retired a dozen years or so. So my knowledge is a bit rusty. But when I saw an interview with Mark Zuckerber in his work space, I saw he had a piece of tape over his PC camera. That did it for me. I have tape over the camera lens of my laptop.
My wife thinks I am a paranoid. It's just one thing I don't have to think about.
As to your situation, I don't think this guy can get any satisfaction from exposing your private moments.
I get that and don’t have a web cam on my pc. My bad for not adding 2 & 2 with the cameras on my i-Pad! Honestly didn’t “plan” on doing any of this shit anyway so it’d be kind of moot!! But here we are!!! Guess I’ll know in 2mins @ 12:00.
Its a scam, my husband got one, just ignore it, nothing will happen. Do not reply to it either We both jut laughed, !!when he read it out to me.

I’m one stubborn American mick! If there is a glimmer out there, I’m still chasing it. There is absolutely NO thrill / pleasure involved only the thought of a successful outcome. Like I mentioned, I see about 50% return to my old self. This up from “negative” numbers!!! I may have mishandled todays challenge by putting too much info out there but like I said, my head was spinning out of control! It dawned on me while reading the comments that this was taking me back to my anxiety and depression days that I fought my way out of. Had my left over bottle of Ativan in my hand and ready to go! Put the breaks on and took the post down. Not going backwards especially by some PoS’s doing!! I still don’t know if the threat / blackmail is credible but I can fight what I can see not some “c. u. Next Tuesday” hiding behind a keyboard, f#$king people over in lieu of working for a living!! But I’m not bitter!!
This is just a scam and no one has caught you doing anything on video! It is an international widespread blackmail pattern. These scams are sent in massive amounts and the sender uses addresses that have leaked when they have hacked a company's user data database.
On the Haveibeenpwned.com website, you can check if your email address or username is listed among known leaks.
Welp I could write volumes about this stuff. I’m an extremely knowledgeable computer engineer , I write code in half a dozen ( old ) languages ... mumps, c+, c+++, turtle, cpm , dos , old http , etc. and I’ve had the most massive attacks any person could ever have.
I had 5 overlapping home automation networks installed ... wemo, Vera edge, swann ring , xFi , etc ... a vast network of IoT devices ...all interlinked. Over 120 IoT home automation devices online at one time.
Well to make a long story short , I stupidly left an old dos xp-pro pc online on the network and basically forgot about it in the closet in the back room ( for 9 years ) I only used it as a smart device controller / interface. Sadly it was an open door to invite in the hackers and computer criminals in. NOTE: anyone using IoT devices online ... patched thru your router ( accessible from away from the house ) is simply begging for trouble. Unless it’s xfi devices , immediately close the outside porting in your router and never use it again. It’s like leaving a gate open to your house you can drive a Diesel truck thru.
I had my inside cameras hacked and follow me around the house being watched 1000s of hours ... my alarm system sirens activated in the middle of the night 100s of times .. had people scream and curse at me thru both my inside and outside cameras .. had my garage door opened so many times in the middle of the night that I had to unplug it nights before going to bed ... and much more.
I’ve received the “ we’ve got pictures and videos “ email terrorism demanding $1500 in bit coins a dozen times or more.
Most hacking today is done by professional business hackers located in tall buildings full of floors of paid hackers that do nothing else. It’s a full time job for them. My main hackers were Ukrainian and Russian and expert professionals. Obviously I knew they were in my system but too lazy to mess with them. Then when I got the $1500 ransom note they pi$$ed me off. I found that one hacker was using one of my modems to terrorize other people and stored many files hidden ( poorly ) on one of my network drives. I accessed his family / personal photos library and proceeded to use photoshop to .... er ...ah ...” customize “ family photos to VERY rude x-rated photos. Then I told the random demander to go XXXX himself ...both things set off an anger storm that continues ( worthlessly ) even today nearly two years later. Seems like many people working for them have adhd - odd personality disorders to carry a grudge that long.
I told them if they knew someone they could show my photos or video to, let me know and I’d like to see it too. I’m retired, my family is dead .. and really if they had some “ good “ ones , I might be proud as a white haired old man my age to have them looked at yayahahahaya. Go right ahead ...... yayahahahaya. That triggered a storm where they tried a ddos attack on me for months and a gigantic attack on my IoT , smart tv and smart fridge. Yayahahahaya
I removed all my interior cameras, and pulled out my army of IoT devices ( got a ring camera, toss it... any ported outside interior network cameras ... unplug them ) Etc. I changed to 24 hour monitored super fast ( non ddos jamable ) xfinity mesh XFi ... 3 gigabit bandwidth. I now have two outside video camera systems and nothing inside automated. Indoors automation has no protection. So .... close “ ALL “ porting inside your router, nothing to the outside world ever again except xFi style monitored cameras, erase , clean and reload every single pc, pad , smart tv , phone etc you own .... and “ very “ important .... totally erase any and all mail clients you own on any device you own ( even your smart tv ) ... always log onto your isp provider site and send and read ALL your emails in “ their “ computers and not yours ( their massive mainframes can resist mail bombs ) Next trick is that besides your cable isp connection , always activate and frequently use the “ hot spot “ on your mobile devices to access the internet from time to time. If you have two smart phones, then activate one on Verizon and one on AT&T etc. this gives you three isp addresses to switch between. You cannot stop seasoned hackers after you, but you can confuse them and divert them and hardly miss a beat with your web life. They absolutely cannot attack ALL your isp resources at one time. You can and will still get “ mailbombed “ even opening your mail in the isp’s mainframe ... when you see your wifi isp symbol disappear or your lte seem to stop ... empty / clear your smartphone ( or any ) cookie file , then restart your device on a different isp ( if WiFi when stopped then restart on lte one or lte two ) and keep on trucking. Frequently testing your current connection with Comcast speed test might inform you of a implant and let you know to switch to a different isp connection, then test that one for speed.
Ignore the ransom demand .. they send out hundreds of thousands of those a day ... a handful always bite and keep their payroll going.
I realize this is brief and patchy, it a big topic but I hope you get the basics from all this.
You had me at “welp” and lost me at “I”!!! I used to be very computer savvy. Built a couple machines just for shits and giggles and to say I did. Knew the parts and pieces and could talk intelligently with IT. Between advances in technology and my accelerated cognitive decline....I’ve lost all that now!
Maybe they got some info through a hack or other means. After today’s responses, I’m more convinced that this is a scam. If this is, in fact a credible threat, I’ll run damage control! I will not respond to these people. I set my i-phone to full time DnD allowing my contacts only.
If I get notified that something was distributed, I know everything I’ve done (only a few times) and its not obscene..... just embarrassing and explainable! I know I can not compete with them so like you say... pissing them off will do nothing but manifest the situation!!! Thank you for your (obviously) great deal of thought and time. Place a placard ( half a Manila file folder ) in front of the camera .... I say “ show at 7:00 p.m. , pst ... “ or similar. Then when the camera red access light comes on .
At seven ..... I remove the placard and strut out in front of the camera .... 375 pound beer gut, Giant adt boobs , Zometa broken tooth grin, high heels, torn panty hose and feather boa and do a little dance. Usually I hear some coughing and gaging from the camera speaker and the light Goes off fast. Then turn the placard around and say “ thanks for watching , and send me a copy of the video file please “ . Yayahahahaya yayahahahaya. After the hackers regain their “ I can’t unsee that “ mental stability , they never come back again. It’s easy ....💪💪💪👍👍👍😂😂😂
