Of course, what do I know?
I read this and found it encouraging for a case like mine in an oblique kind of way. I did not have mets on pathology after RP but I was Gleason 9 stage pt3b which is highly indicative of future progression . I firmly believe that having my prostate removed has slowed the advancement of and reduced the severity of my disease.
I had to argue with my surgeon to operate even though the cancer had spread to the pelvic area. My surgeon does thousands of DaVinci prostate surgery’s a year and in fact, did the first DaVinci prostate surgery back in 2001. At the time of my operation (spring 2016) he was still of the opinion that surgery was not an option if it migrated past the prostate (hence our vigorous discussions). Just a year and a half later, more and more surgeons agree on the benefits of surgery even with pelvic involvement.
It is a lesson we must always keep in mind. We must all become our best advocates. We must have the currage and strength to discuss (argue) with our medical team on our care.
Anyone that has just been diagnosed with cancer that has spread past the prostate but where the urologist states it is to late to operate should give the surgeon a copy of the above article.
Will be sharing this with my team when I go in for my next check up for sure!
If I was the one that mentioned something that scared or upset you I apologize. Sometimes I get discussed with my cancer and it's progression and feel sorry for myself. I usually do a good job of being positive and upbeat but sometimes I get depressed.
Sorry
Dennis
