Hi all,

Have you ever heard of essential oils?? How reliable they are.. As my son is 5 years old and is an ADHD case. He has problem I sitting and focusing.. He even doesn't have patience to sit for a minute and answer for what others are asking.. Really worried about him.. Don't want to keep him on medication as they have so many side effects.. Plz suggest what to do for him

Has he been formally diagnosed as ADHD? If so is he on medication and what side effects is he suffering? If you have a good doctor then you should talk this over with them. We looked into homeopathic meds to help our son but we didn't find anything that looked like it would be effective. I'd also be interested in hearing from anyone who has had success with alternative treatments. Good luck and I hope you get the answers you need.

Honestly the only thjng that keeps my son calm and focused is Ritalin. We spent a long time working different doses and time releases. Talk to your doctor.

Great question. There is no proof it works. Other parents have told me they tried it without success.

Hmm.. Some of the Facebook groups claim that these are very effective for kids..

Anecdotal reports can be influenced by a variety of factors. If you watch TV, you know that anyone can claim almost anything. I have not heard positive reports from other parents.

OK.. Then what will be the safe and effective way to make our kids focused and calm?? Also my son doesn't think before doing any work.. How to increase his thinking skills??

Sounds like ADHD act before thinking). Have you read Russell Barkley's book Taking Charge of ADHD? Good source of information about treatment options (And based on science and not opinion).

Talk with his regular doctor about treatment options. For us, stimulant medication was very helpful and had no 'evil' side effects (stimulants get a lot of bad press but, when used correctly and with supervision, should have no irreversible problems. Remember, this group of medications have been around for longer than most readers of this discussion group have been alive).

Which kind of stimulants you are using and what changes you can see in ur kid?? Here in India there are no more options available for these kids.. Also people are not aware of this term ADHD.. So Plz guide me about these stimulants and book both.. So that I can also start with it.. Thanks in advance

I tried essential oils and they didn’t help. If you are not on board with medications, and even if you were, I recommend taking your child to a psychiatrist who practices comprehensive medicine. They had my son get his blood tested for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. It’s a good place to start.

Thanks.. So which type of medication you are giving to ur kid?? I have heard about this biomedical but some of my known didn't find any result from it.. Essential oils are not harmful. Thats why I want to try.. But don't know much about them..

My son takes Focalin and guanfacine. Nd sorry it is integrative medicine. He takes fish oil, vitamin D, magnesium, iron, b12, and zinc.

Those are his meds. They have worked the best for him but of course each child is different. For the essential oils we used a focus blend from doterra.

How did this essential oil worked for ur kid?? Coz medication have so many side effects.. My son is just 4.9 years old..

Essential oils didn’t work for him unfortunately. We ended up starting medications just after his 5th birthday. It’s a very very difficult decision that each parent has to make. I hope you get some good advice on oils and you find them useful to address the ADHD.

We did essential oils for years. I am still used we saw a difference combined with therapies and diet but when my son was in 5th grade , we noticed a set back.

.. so we talked to doctor, counselor and we decided to start with medicine (small dose).

I still used essential oils

How much effective it is to calm down and to make them focused with essential oils?? I don't want to put him on medication as there are many side effects I have heard of them

I do a blend of vetiver, cedarwood and lavender and apply on his feet before school and after I apply on the neck.

I was like you with the medicine, that's why I used EO, but when he was in 5th grade (He is in 6th grade now) with all the hormones and changes , EO was not much help, my son didnt even like the smell, the sensation on his feet, neck, everything bothered him so is when we decided to do medicine. Thinking like a headache ...if I have a headache I will use peppermint oil on my forehead but if the headache doesn't go away I will take ibuprofen it might upset my stomach (side effect) but the headache will go away and my tummy

At the end will be ok.

I still do EO with him and my family . I love them but I am more open to medicine now since my son is doing so much better and he feels better.

Many blessings!

Hats off to ur efforts.. Hope my son will also do better.. Main problem is he never thinks of consequences. Whatever he wants to do he does.. Also he can't sit for more than 5 mins.. Also interrupts if others are talking.. Which makes him different from other kids.. Also he can't control his emotions.. What to do and how to control him

That's good.. Which medicine you are giving to him?? What progress did you see when you started giving medicines to him?? Was Ur son hyperactive??

That’s been similar to our experience. We used a lot of diet and essential oils (including the ones listed above plus Juniper Berry at night to help calm down/anxiety, and Lemon in his water to help him focus). Once he started puberty, the hormones were more than the natural remedies could handle, and he needed to take Concerta and Anti-anxiety meds. We still use the natural things to help things out, as they still make a positive difference. Again, this is anecdotal evidence and not substantiated by any clinical studies.

He also recently started seeing a counselor, and that’s been really helpful. He’s 12 now, and shows that he’s ready for it. He had done some art therapy/counseling in previous years but it didn’t seem to help him. That was our experience.
