Experiences with Hysterectomies?

SincerelyAWeirdo profile image

I waited 8 months for my hysterectomy consult! They are hoping to have the surgery booked for end of next month.

I am hoping to find out all kinds of stories and experiences with them, to be prepared for my “eviction” day lol.

Thanks everyone!

I had a hysterectomy back in 2019 due to fibroids. They left my ovaries, so my menopause symptoms have started big time, lol. The surgery itself was fine, just make sure you don’t over do it during your recovery - you’ll have days where you feel stronger but I found that all of a sudden your body will let you know you’ve hit your limit and you need to rest.

Hello, I had one at the age of 39, what type are you having, mine was a Total Abdominal Hysterectomy and quite a major invasive surgery. Hopefully you are having keyhole? Happy to help with details if I can x

I had an Hysterectomy many years ago, in 1995 , i was 24yrs old, My tubes ovaries were left due to my age, i had a full open operation which i believe they do not always do now , but by keyhole and suction. My stay in hospital was 14 days long. Since then i got a life,, which i was immensely grateful to the consultant, if i could change 1 thing its that id known how thick the scar tissue can become over many years and used everything i could of to limit the scarring.

wow! The stay in hospital was very long for you :( but that sounds like a very extensive procedure! I will be having it done Vaginally, so no external cuts will be made at all. They give you the choice to go home the same day in the afternoon, or I will have choice to sleep at hospital if I feel better to. I’m glad you are doing great now!

How procedures have indeed changed, i know when friends and family members have since had this done, they had 2 tiny cuts 1 above the pubic bone and 1 under the belly button, for a camera to be inserted the other to pump gas in which gives a clearer image, they did however have a 5 day stay. If they offer for you too stay do so, they can give better pain relief and monitor the bladder and bowls, as they can suffer side effects, my bowl would not get going, and i woke up from the op dying for a wee but totally unable, result was to be catharised for a week, as it turned out i got a infection. The hysterectomy however its done depending on the reasons its being done can take a long time to get over, i had 3 children under 6 yrs old, i was at work 6 weeks later, but i was full of painkillers, for at least 2 weeks i was advised no lifting even a kettle, i was very tired after doing hardly a thing.

This new way i hope does not leave you needing the same aftercare, i had a check up 6 weeks after to ensure everything was as it should be, just like a post natal check at the hospital .

I send wishes for a successful procedure no complications & speedy recovery.

I had a hysterectomy in 1988, I was 28. They did not do vaginal surgeries then. Mine was due to adenomyosis, which is very painful. It gave me my life back. My ovaries became more cystic (cysts would form each month after the egg was let out- corpus luteal cysts). I had oophorectomies (ovaries removed) in 1992 and 1994. I recommend hormone replacement. After the hysterectomy I don't think my ovaries were producing the right amount of hormones. They left them because of my age. In 1994 they put me on hormone therapy and I felt great.
