My mother has fatty liver

I need help knowing how to help my mother feel better, or comfortable with her nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It’s been so sad watching her and I want to help her with her diet and meds but it seems no one knows ... mayo says everything in moderation but she is sick.

Do any of you have any experience with this disease?

Thank you

My Dr recommended Purea to help prevent fatty liver. Don't know how it works if you already have fatty liver.

Thank you! I should probably look into it for myself ?!

Hi always.

I just Googled this, and a lot of information came up. On NHS choices they also gave details of the different stages of 'fatty liver'. The various sites all seem to be saying similar with regards to diet : fresh fruit and veg. Low-glycaemic foods. Foods without added sugar and salt. Low dairy and meat. Low fat. Healthy oils. If ovetwieght, try to lise somd etc. Check it out.

There is also a Liver forum on Health Unlocked - I wonder if you may find others on there with similar condition?

Hope this helps.

Hi again always.

What actually was your Mum's diagnosis? Did she have an Ultrasound scan of her liver, kidneys and Gallbladder?

I ask because, back in around 2009 - 2010 ( I think ) the Gastroenterologist thought I had fatty liver. This was because I had deranged Liver Function blood tests results.

If I had been a drinker, they would have said it was the alcohol! When I had the Ultrasound scan, the liver looked normal! Anyway, my Liver bloods results improved on their own.

However, I'd had lots of bloods done in early September 2008 by my GP and the Colorectal Consultant. My GP - because I had a serious incident of chest pain in late August, and the Colorectal Department - because I"d had an urgent referal for bowel dysfunction with bleeding in late July.

No one told me the results. It was these bloods that had lots of abnormalIties including - a raised one that confirmed recent heart attack; Hypothyroid results on Thyroid Function Tests and Liver Enzymes abnormal - raised.

They eventually come back to within normal range. If wasn't until 2011 that I was actually formally diagnosed with my Thyroid conditions.

On my abdo Ultrasound scan in 2010 they found numerous Gallstones which I"d had years, about ten the radiographer said. But this was no surprise to me, because of my history of feeling sick and other symptoms. I said no, about 20 years ( no GP had bothered to send me for a scan before).

BUT the Gastroenterology doctor gave me dietay advice - no fat etc.

So I am thinking, shouldn't your Mum's Consultant have done full investigations, and given dietary advice or refered her to a dietician?

Perhaps her condition will improve with diet and time ? Could you ask her GP or Consultant?

Has she had other things, such as Thyroid problems, ruled out? Because an Underactive Thyroid can effect ALL organs and body functions.

I understand how hard it is to see your Mum unwell, my late Mum had numerous conditions. You just want to do whatever you can to make them as well and as comfortable as can be. Doctors don't always give full information - you have to ask questions.

Hope she feels encouraged by your help with diet etc and she finds foods she likes amongst what she should eat!

My one main dietay tip is always this - never make yourself eat something you don't like just because you think you should or it's good for you! Meals should be enjoyed and whilst relaxed - and not stressful.

All the best xxx
