On Tuesday I was told from my doctor that I have an underactive thyroid. She has prescribed me with thyroid medication and is hoping that I should lose weight. I currently weigh 17 stone and I am 5'4 in height. I am a fussy eater and I also find it hard to exercise. What tips would any of you ladies suggest

MissSKOctober,

You probably won't lose any weight until you are optimally medicated. The starting dose on Levothyroxine is unlikely to be an optimal dose as thyroid hormone has to be introduced gradually to avoid an adrenal crisis. Dose is usually raised in 25mcg increments every 6-8 weeks until TSH is 1.0 or lower and FT4 in the upper range. Levothyroxine is not a weight loss aid but should make you feel well enough to exercise to lose weight you have gained.

For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements and oestrogen.

It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it starts working and it will take up to six weeks to feel the full impact of the dose. Symptoms may lag behind good biochemistry by several months.

You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.

Get Walking. This is one of he best ways to lose weight. Get a pedometer and try and walk 10,000 steps a day. it may seem a large amount but believe me this can be done in about 1.5 hours at a normal walking pace. You do not have to endure the gym. Swimming is another good source of exercise. Anything that is going to increase your heart rate. Good Luck!

thank you, I think I will download a pedometer app, as I am always outside with my toddler.
