Naproxen

I have been given Naproxen and also Omeprozole . I have only been taking them for 3 days but I am now suffering with awful stomach cramps . Can anybody tell me which of the tablets might be causing it . Thank you .

Hi Fedupoldie, I’ve used naproxen for about 10 years and never had an issue with it. I do have what I call a strong tummy, ie can take meds on empty tummy without issue. I would recommend you give your doc or pharmacy a call and discuss. Take care x

The omeprazole is usually given for acid reflux/stomach probs and also to protect the stomach when strong painkillers such as naproxen have been prescribed. I would suggest that the naproxen is the culprit. I agree that you should speak to your pharmacist/doctor. Take care 😊

Hello Fedupoldie,

We are not medically trained here, but I agree it is most likely to be the naproxen. (My Hubby can't tolerate them at all). I agree with Marylou, speak to your Doctor or pharmacist, I expect they will be able to prescribe something else for you :)

Thank you . I’ll take your advice .

Hi,

My hubby has IBS & can't take Omeprozole. You may get away with taking Naproxen for a few days without Omeprozole but you need to be super careful & have a chat with your GP. Good luck.

Thanks . I don’t think it’s the omeprazole that’s causing the problem , I think it might be the Naproxen , but I’ll try to speak to the doctor ASAP. In the meantime I have stopped taking both tablets and the pain seems to be easing .

Hi, it seems that you have plenty of advice here. My experience of taking these tablets were similar to yours and my GP suggested a different stomach liner, Lansoprazole to try and that made a difference. I did not know whether you are aware that Omeprazole or lansoprazole should be taken in a morning half an hour to an hour before eating and then take Naproxen with food. Hope all goes well for you.

I was taking the Naproxen with food but wasn’t told to take the Omeprazole half an hour before food . I am away at a wedding this weekend but will contact GP when I get back . I am still having some stomach pain but it’s now gradually fading .Thanks for your help .

Hi I take these too

The naproxen is an anti-inflammatory and can cause stomach ulcers the omeprazole is given with it to reduce stomach acid to stop you getting it you must take it.

If you take both of them at the same time and you are still getting stomach problems you need to speak to your doctor IMMEDIATELY!
