Why we eat too much

Hi everyone. I am currently reading a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson entitled Why We Eat Too Much. It is so interesting and really explains how eating and obesity relates to our hormone balance and the effects processed food and refined carbohydrates / sugar has on this. Interestingly it also discusses the role essential fats omega 3 and omega 6 have on weight gain. This particularly relates to processed food. Thought I would share as it is definitely worth a read x

I'm avoiding sugar, sweetener and refined carbs and having a fish oil capsule every day and it's working well for me. I definitely don't feel as hungry as before.

That's good to hear. It certainly seems to way to go. I have been calorie counting but struggle with feeling hungry. I will move over to this way of eating. Thanks for your reply.

Give it a week without sugar and sweetener and then see how you are feeling. I had a very sweet tooth and was having far too much sugar in thing's like biscuits or chocolate. If I need a snack now I have nuts or small portion of cheese and biscuits like a babybell and two oat cakes.

I take fish oil but have not found where it curbs my appetite at all. It has helped my cholesterol somewhat.

I suspect it's the reduction of sugar and refined carbs that's had the most significant effect on appetite, but you may find this interesting healthline.com/nutrition/om...

Hi Zendaya, sounds like a good book! I'll add that one to my list to read :-) I'm doing the same as Bear789 above - have cut out processed food, sugar, refined carbs, increased healthy fats. Wonderful to be released from the endless constant thinking about food and hunger. Hope it works well for you too.

For me, food has always been a comfort thing. I know it’s numbing effect is only temporary and then the guilt kicks in. I’ve been on a healthy eating plan before, lost a lot of weight and maintained for a few years but then gained it back when I struggled with emotional upheaval. I’m finding a mix of counselling to find healthier coping mechanisms & eating nutrient dense whole foods is really working - the healthy eating not only keeps me feeling full but boosts my mood. I still struggle with chocolate cravings but I know it’s a lifetime habit I’m trying to break. I don’t add sugars to my food or drinks but do eat delicious fruit and have a planned chocolate snack each weekend - a treat sized bar which I walk to the shop to buy so I don’t have it in the house. My ideal would be to feel OK around all food, eat nutritional tasty home cooked food the majority of the time but have the occasional treat without guilt.

Yes there are so many aspects around why we eat and makes the choices we do. At least by recognising this we are able to understand and take action. Thanks for your reply. The support on here from everyone is amazing 😀

Hi Zendaya your book sounds very interesting. I started reading a book called How to Just Eat It, this is based on the idea that joining weight watching clubs etc is a waste of time as when you stop going on goes the weight again. She is trying to help us to look at good in a different way and find food freedom. Which is good but it became very complicated as you were encouraged to listen to blogs and develop intuitive eating!!!! I am also reading a book on mindful eating which is very interesting and based on Buddhism.

That is so interesting. I started my weight loss journey over 12 years ago with weight watchers. I had struggled with my weight all my life and after back surgery things just got worse. After going to weight watchers I lost over 5 stone and kept it off for years...mainly by going hungry. I then had problems with severe arthritis in both hips and the weight started to go up. When I learned about the devastating affects of sugar, I went sugar free and the weight dropped off,. Then along came problems at work, medication for my hips and surgery. As a consequence I turned to sugar again followd by the traditional low fat low calorie diet, which is not really sustainable long term. Although I knew this wasn't the way to go somehow I felt like I was back to square one so I started on the same path again... Hopefully I have turned the corner again as I'm back on sugar free, low carb and high healthy fat, It is so good to find this forum where we can exchange our ideas and support each other x

Are you still finding the book helpful a month on Zendaya ? Would the tips in the book work for someone on a vegan lifestyle or does it promote low carbs/ restricting any fruit/veg etc?

Zendaya profile image

I think it could work for a vegan lifestyle. Its not all about low carb, more about processed food and unhealthy oils. There is a big focus on how the omega 3 and omega 6 fats are a long way from their ideal ratio and this is not only due to processed carbohydrates but also fats such as sunflower oil, which is promoted as healthy. However it is heavily processed and high in omega 6. I would also recommend looking up the work of Professor Robert Lustig who has studied the effects of sugar on hormones and the brain.
