Feeling deflated

fedupoffeelingtired profile image

Been doing the 12 week plan with my hubby. We eat the same food, do the same exercise, he cheats a bit I don't. Weighed yesterday he has lost 3 kg in the week and I've put on a lb. Boy has he rubbed it in! 😢

Oh no - it’s awful when that happens. It’s not nice that he’s rubbed it in to you - but keep at it!! It will work - men always seem to loose more. You can rub it in when it’s the other way round!! 🤣

You cannot compare your weight loss journey with anyone else's, particularly your hubby's.

You have several things that work against you:

You're female

Possibly menopausal/peri-menopausal

You are hypothyroid and I wonder if you're being optimally treated.

You have other health concerns and are probably taking some medications.

Your weight loss will happen when it happens, you should just concentrate on your health first and foremost.

Hi there fedupoffeelingtired . Men and women lose weight differently......unfortunately for us women we usually have weight that’s held around our thighs and hips for child bearing and this is subcutaneous fat, where as a man usually carries his extra weight around their midsection and this is visceral fat. Men’s bodies have more muscle and thanks to this composition a higher metabolic rate than women. When men start to lose their visceral fat, it increases their metabolic rate making it easier for men to lose weight. Unfortunately for women losing subcutaneous fat does not have the same effect on our metabolism and we have to work harder at losing weight. Because of our differences being on the same weight loss plan will have different effects on you and your husband. Hope that helps.

As moreless has already mentioned, there's no race and you can only follow your own path.

A couple of suggestions come to mind... Have you thought about joining in with the weekly weigh-ins and using the Daily Diary? These threads help with focus and build up routines! Using the DD may help you spot if there's any tweaks that might help with your health plan :) :)

Best of luck :)

oh Bless you it's awful isn't it. Over the last 20 years my husband has eaten far more than me and although he hasn't gone to the gym and tried AT ALL. He has maintained his 32 inch waistline, weight and fitness and I have ballooned.

In simple numbers men need 500 calories a day than woman. No sex equality at all very fed up making.

And as everyone else has said no comparisons. Some weeks I sts for ages and get encouraged in my group, some weeks I lose.

If you have more than a couple of lbs you need to look at current weight, how much you need to lost and realise you are in it for a long haul. Try to ignore him, I know it's hard when you feel like bawling, I soooooo know. Do it for you. Because you want to. Adjust your intake and try to look at it as a whole new lifestyle rather than a diet.

If you are able to find a non food reward for yourself, that might help.

Have a good week.

Hi there, I read your post and can empathise completely as I have been there before myself. My hubby would lose weight much quicker than me and I would be left feeling quite disappointed. I found moving away from following exactly the same diet helped me. I experimented with more with foods to find what worked better for me and made sure my portion size was always smaller than my husbands. As others have commented, men seem to burn calories and lose weight faster than us women, especially those of us with health conditions to contend with. Keep at it...and the weight will come off. Even if it comes off slowly, every little loss will be a step in the right direction. Good luck!!

Ha ha ha - that’s why girls need girl diet buddies - my husband just thinks about losing weight and he does - I have to eat less, exercise and don’t deviate and then I MIGHT lose some weight - it’s our hormones....that’s why I bought a scale with water% measurements as well so when I don’t lose weight I at least can understand when my water % increases - just don’t give up!

@fedupoffeelingtired I was in the same situation (hypothyroidism). I was very strict with my diet and my husband wasn't. He started to lose weight immediately and I was going extremely slow. Now I have lost about 15 kg in 9 months! I'm still going very slowly but I keep losing weight. Just be patient :)

Thanks everybody, that has given me a kick up the bum so to speak. It's good to know others have found it hard too. I've made myself a goal. If restrictions are lifted my son will graduate in July and I want to wear a dress for the first time in 12 years. So just dropping one dress size would make me feel comfortable enough to do it. Fingers crossed 🤞
