Newby, has anyone tried meal replacements?

Hi, I’m new to the group and would appreciate support from like minded people.

I have been type 2 diabetic since 2011. I’m on 3 types of medication with a BMI of 27.7 and rubbish at dieting.

Apart from wanting to look good my main concern is my diabetes. I’m due to see my practice nurse in June to be “told off”. My last HBA1C reading jumped from 51 to 61 due to a 7lb weight gain. I’m struggling with eating sensibly with lockdown and also not getting in as much exercise in the form of walking.

I gained weight following a skin cancer diagnosis last year which was successfully removed I hasten to add. My Consultant told me that I don’t really fit into the category of the type of skin cancer I had (which was BCC) because I’m a little younger and not really fair skinned. My Dad died of a diabetic related sarcoma cancer 5 years ago and my Daughter had lymphoma 4 years ago. I feel that I have joined “cancer camp” as my dry Daughter puts it and it’s sent me into a spin. It’s hit me hard psychologically even though the cancer was never a threat. It’s not something I can discuss with my family members.

Diet wise..... I’ve never lost weight through dieting, only through illness and the family illnesses. I’ve lost 3 stone since my diabetes diagnosis but I’m not good at regimented dieting.

I was wondering if anyone is aware of the Newcastle diet which is a diabetes UK recognised diet involving meal replacement shakes. I’m thinking that would take the thought out of food and be the boost I need. Have any of you tried it?

So.... I haven’t got any control of cancer in the future but I have the chance to control my diabetes. I’ve got to get a grip. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm afraid there aren't many of us here that are fans of meal replacement shakes, as they teach you nothing about good nutrition and any weight loss is likely to be followed by a rapid regain. What you need to do is to cut back on carbohydrates, as they're what's responsible for your T2D, just losing weight won't be enough. Have a look at these:

Hi. Welcome. You have come to the right place to get help and support. An admin will be along soon to welcome you and give you some links to read. I don't think meal replacement shake are a good idea. They may help you lose weight but when you stop them and start eating again the weight will go back on. I can't believe that is a recommended diet.

You can reverse diabetes by following a LCHF diet. You cut out carbs like bread pasta rice and potatoes and eat lots of fresh food and healthy fats. I was prediabetic in summer 2018 and by following this diet my blood sugars return to normal. There is a great LCHF forum on here. Do have a read around. Also have a look at the dietdoctor website. There is lots of information and recipe ideas on there.

You sound like you have been through a tough time but you can do this! Come and ask any questions. There are a lot of people around who do LCHF who will be very supportive. Good luck.

Not a fan of the meal replacement concept, to be honest. I've found a LCHF (low carb - not no carb and low sugar/processed foods) approach to be successful. Principally because it addresses the cravings and hunger that lead to snacking and misery. Well worth reading around the topic with the links others have shared.

We are all different. If I ever say anything about these then they may be ok for a kickstart but I can't see how anyone wouldn't be miserable and be able to sustain a social life after lockdown on these . I maintain my weight with 3 balanced meals per day , try not to snack or eat after my evening meal but it is easy said as it took a lot of will power, the gym and shopping plans / lists etc and not the wierd situation we have now . If you can cope with meal replacements as we can't go to cafes etc then try for temp kick but wouldn't do for long .

I’m taking full advantage of the lockdown by not bringing goodies in the house and not being tempted. I’m functional with my shopping buying fresh fruit, vegetables and salad. Just staying focused. I know what I’m like..... I only have to slip up once and my resolve slips for the whole day. I’m really negative.

I agree that the LCHF route is the best for me. I haven’t really got a sweet tooth but I love potatoes and bread. I’m filling my plate with loads of mainly green veg and less potatoes than usual.
