Lighterflyer's Easter Challenge - I lost self control

The wrong way !!! Sorry and ashamed to say the scales have gone the wrong way. I lost self control. I thought one won't hurt. One led to two three and four. Too many carbs. Not a good week but I hope I have learned that you can't deny the fact that too many carbs will increase the weight gain. I was putting honey or syrup in my low fat yoghurts plus other things like jam on bread etc. I have to ignore my sweet tooth and crack on. Today's weight is a gain of one pound. So I have gone backwards to 13 stone 5lbs now. Total Loss 2 lbs. Sorry.

Oh my gosh you have nothing to be ashamed of. Far from it. I know I too have a sugar problem. Do not beat yourself up. Learn from it and make the necessary changes you can handle. Whether it's throwing all sugar items out. Then once and a while go out and buy a single serving treat. I am a newbie and I am waiting a month before taking that step.

I know you can do this. You have the power. X

Nice to meet you.

Don't be ashamed for putting on weight lighterflyer or so many of us here would be on our knees, dressed in sack cloth and self flagellating :O The situation you're in is not a lack of willpower but the way in which your body deals with carbs.

In the simplest of explanations, your body converts carbs into sugar in your blood which provides a kind of 'high'. Your body doesn't want high levels of sugar in the blood so releases insulin which rapidly removes that sugar from your blood and creates a 'low' and therefore leading to the cravings you describe.

From my own personal experience, I would describe the effect as an out of body experience, watching myself head again and again to the cupboard/fridge/freezer for more sugary foods. I'd be screaming at that person to stop but that person wouldn't listen.

We're led to believe we have a sweet tooth but in essence it's chemistry/biology.

Be aware too that even the low fat yoghurt has four times more carbs in it than full fat. Don't be afraid of fat as it is mostly our friend and in addition is instrumental in sating our appetite.

Btw, have you thought of joining Friday's Weigh-in... healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Don't let this momentary setback drag you down. Each time something doesn't go to plan, it's a chance for us to learn, to change our outlook and our plans, implement those plans and then see if those plans work.

You'll get there! :)

Great answer 😁

Dear lighterflyer - it’s infuriating. No not you & your experience. But the pervasive lies from other ‘dieters’ and the dieting industry, we can have ‘little treats’ as we eat healthily. And not just we can have little treats, but we MUST treat ourselves. And those must be sweet - not a new lipstick or a film, but it must be sugar. Or we will feel ‘deprived’ and dear me, if we feel deprived the sky will fall in, and we might binge. (But that’s exactly what we do anyway...) So we have one little treat which ‘can’t hurt’, and you know the rest.

As Tiggerr says, sugar is addictive as cocaine - not for everyone but for some of us, because if the way our metabolic hormones behave. Cold turkey is the answer I am afraid. Obviously you don’t HAVE to go cold turkey on sugar. It’s just the wisest and possibly easiest thing in your situation. I used to be someone who ate a whole bag of toffees while I was driving, or ate a huge cake tin of chocolate crispie cakes - maybe 20 in a go. Now, having given up sugar for 2 months, I am as interested in cake as a new power drill. Which is not much.

Anyway... this is meant as food for thought. Not bossy advice, but something to think about.

Hello lighter flyer,

I have edited your post and changed your title so that we don't confuse people looking for the Easter Challenge thread. I have also linked this post to the Lytham 's Easter Challenge so that she will see it :)

The challenge can always be found in Pinned Posts,

Please don't beat yourself up about putting on 2lbs. I don't really have much to add to the above replies and support you have already had. Most of us have a bad week at some point and sugar really is a demon hard to control. Just keep going, it gets easier with time :)

I’ve been there so many times I can’t tell you! It’s a vicious circle that goes round and round. The best way I’ve found to reduce those carbs is to increase your fat intake and gradually the cravings will subside then you can ease off on the fats a little. My advice would be to go and buy yourself a trolley full of cheese! 😁
